I just bought my first AK clone and was wondering if anyone knew whether the bolt is stainless steel or chrome plated.

It's a Century built M70B1 with Zastava markings.

I believe they're stainless but I'm not 100% sure.

Also believe stainless as Yugoslavia did not have access to chrome otherwise they might have put some in the barrel.

That is a often quoted rumor that has taken on a almost factual understanding. The real truth is that Yugoslavia, in particular Macedonia, was a exporter of Chromium.

Why they did not use Chrome in their barrels? That is still a mystery and source of speculation. It was not due to a lack of resource for Chromium. Of course the chrome process is not just about chromium, but also about copper and nickel.

The bolt and carrier are "In the white" as in not blued or plated.  It is not stainless.  Treat it like you would a Mosin-Nagant or Mauser bolt.

Enjoy the Yugo.  I love mine!
