Went to local indoor range today to shoot AK.  Had to either have hollowpoints or softpoints. Told him I had hollowpoints, so he asked to see them, then told me I couldn't shoot them because they were steel.  Since I had no other ammo, he just happened to have for sale a box of 20 acceptable softpoints for $18.  I declined and shot my m1 carbine instead.  I thought a hollowpoint was a hollowpoint regardless of core and would still expand upon impact and not penetrate steel plate.    Oh well, learned something today.  He also said I should not be shooting steel ammo because the bullet will harm the barrel and the case will harm the chamber and extractor.  True ??  Finally, where can I get some reasonably priced plinking non-steel hollowpoints and/or softpoints and what is a reasonable price.

Thanks.

It is not the core that is steel but the bullet jacket. All the Russian ammo currently imported except for the Wolf on the right in the pic has copper plated steel jackets. The full metal jacket, hollow point, and soft point bullets all have copper plated steel jackets.
False the steel of the bullet jackets is really soft and besides the copper plating is what comes into contact with the bore of the rifle not the steel jacket. You will have to buy some of the Wolf copper jacket ammo which where to order some from depends on where you are located in the USA. The copper jacketed Wolf ammo is only $5-$10 more per 1000 than the steel jacketed ammo.

Thanks for the reply and the clarification.

I appreciate it.

Your indoor range guy is a moron.  At least from the version you posted here he has no idea what he is talking about.

No AK ammo currently being imported is steel cored.  There is some old Norinco steel core ammo that was imported prior to being banned around and available, but the Wolf ammo is a lead bullet.

Your AK is perfectly happy firing steel cased ammo.

Find a new place to shoot where they actually know something.

Relax, he came here to learn, and is learning.

Sounds to me as if the guy was trying to make a quick sale.

I had a similar experience at my range. I went as far as contacting WOLF via e-mail and telling then that my range was saying their ammo was steel core AP. WOLF called my range and straightend them out, now I can shoot the copper jacket stuff. As for the steel case hurting your gun....have you ever heard of a gun breaking due to the type of case it is firing. The guy at my range told me the same thing. I just laughed at him and told him to find a new job.

Yes I have.  I have heard that some extractors can break because of the harder steel case.  I use wolf a lot in my SKS's and AK's but I don't fire it in my US made weapons anymore.  I shot about 1000 rds of 223 wolf awhile back and found that most of the fired cases started spliting at the neck, some split down the case quite aways.  I never have that problem with Brass.

About the case spliting.... I believe that is a gun problem, the cases are sitting diffrent then their brass counterpart. As for the extractor breaking I have never heard that. If it does happen I would bet it is due to a bad extractor not the ammo, because many many members on this board have fired probably millions of rounds total of steel cased ammo with no problem. Are you trying to say that russian guns shoot steel ammo better because their gun steel is harder than american gun steel...I dont think so. Steel hurting your gun is a myth but if you dont like it.....dont shot it, easy as that. I have shot thousands of rounds in both my american and foreign guns with zero problems.
