Hello new member!
I want to try some custom work to my AK for the first time, I want a cherry red glossy look, with real Russian medals in the wood on the stock and forearm on both sides here are some pictures of what i want to try.. http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/774/pix251863593u.jpg http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2241/pix251863687t.jpg http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4750/pix251863515.jpg Can anyone give me some tips on how to get the wood to come out to that exact coloring and gloss? Also what kind of gloss shoudl I use to seal those medals in the wood work. The hardest part is going to be sanding down the areas where the medals will be place... Thank! |
| I would use a dremel to cut out the area where the medal is going to go. Be careful as doing this by hand you will have to be steady. My guess is that they cut out the wood, then stain it, then place the medal in and fill the area where the medal is with clear gloss polyeurethane, then they probably coat the whole thing with a few coats of clear gloss polyeurethane to make the whole thing shine. |
| Those are hat pins in the pic, available herehttp://www.rusmilitary.com/html/c-wear_insignia.htm |

Thanks for the reference info, and actually you can buy the medals and pins |

Nope.....I think they are hideous........... Different strokes for different folks I guess.........show me one legitimate Russian stock set that is as "red" as all these asshats are advertising/selling though................... Anyone contemplating the construction of a set of "furniture" like that should take the time to google "z-recto", and see what kinda wood a real AK wears........... |

I think the shitty Romanian wood he used is ugly as fuck. That HG looks like it's about to give birth. The medals and stuff aren't my thing, but to each their own. The finish on those stocks aren't as bad as some I've seen on here, but I agree with the above poster about the various "fire engine red" attempts at "Russian red" that look totally hideous. |

Not to my liking, either.
I love the way the russian stuff looks but it seems like everyone that attempts to replicate it thinks that the color is stained into the wood. It is actually the reddish tint of the shellac. If you can tint some amber shellac just right, the light colors of the wood give the "glow" from underneath. The inletting of the badges has been on my project list for years now. Just one small one in the stock, though. Those are just a tad over the top. |
