| I'm an AK noob and I was fielding stripping my new AK74 Tantal and for some reason the lower handguard will not come off. What am I missing? Thanks for your help. |
| Update: I still can't get the lower handguard off. I'm disassembling and then reassembling to be more acquainted with the procedure; however, something peculiar now is happening that I didn't notice before. There is about .5-1mm gap between the 'retaining bracket' (I don't know the proper name) and the edge of the handguards. Is that correct? All the pictures I've found put the handguards flush with the 'bracket'. |

To remove the hand guard, rotate the hand guard locking lever to the front and pull the retainer forward and off the front of the wood.
This lever is on the right front side of the hand guard retainer. Use a small screwdriver to rotate the lever. The rear of the hand guard is a stud that slips into the front of the receiver. These are often very tight and often "glued" into the receiver by the wood finish sticking to the metal. To remove, make sure the hand guard retainer is unlocked and pushed forward, then grip the hand guard and pull-wiggle it forward. Wiggle it from side to side, and up and down as you pull. To replace the hand guard, you have to push it all the way into the receiver until the hand guard retainer will seat against the front and the locking lever will rotate back into place. If the hand guard is really tight, you can carefully sand a little off the stud portion until it slips in and out easier, but don't go to far or the hand guard will be too loose. |

I'm not sure what you hammered out, I don't know of any parts that can be hammered on.
Here is a link that will help show you how things come apart on your AK. http://ultimak.com/AKStockR&R.htm#fore I had to hammer out the handguards because the tab height was about a mm too thick and they were semi-glued into the receiver. That link is great (I bookmarked it). Unfortunately my rifle is a Tantal, so it's a little different. The AK field strip is very easy to learn, IMO and the rifle seems so simple compared to an AR. |
