I have a full status update on the Tabuk posted on my blog – lots of pictures of the engraved parts as well as the unfinished stock from Ironwood.  I’m just about ready do start putting the whole thing together.  At this point I’m only really missing one part (the M70 buttpad with screws) – I think I’ve got a front sight detent and spring that will work (cannibalized from an AMD-65 front sight).

I do have one question for those of you who have built the real thing, though.  On spot welding the rail to the receiver, when?  The only welding I’ve done is arc welding for solid state inorganic synthesis (ask me about ternary phosphides!).  I know I can’t have all of the “guts” of the weapon installed when I spot weld for a lot of reasons, but how much can I actually build before I need to get that spot welding done???

Pretty pictures and the full update here:  http://fingolfen.blogspot.com/2009/05/tabuk-status-update.html

thanks for your updates.  We need more such pictures, it's very motivating to me to see other's progress/research.

You spot weld very early in the process...it's done in a bent receiver right after the bending is done and checked, as far as I know.  I only
made a bent blank, and welded the rails after all the holes where cut and filed and the position of the trunninons was determined.

I lleft out an important modifier on that one... "scope"

The scope rail on the tabuk is spot welded as well - trying to figure out how to get that done because I don't work from flats and don't want to buy a spot welder for the rail...
