So, I've built 2 receivers with Tapco Improved flats and the included rails. I welded them in place such that the holes of the railes aligned with the holes in the receiver and they were parallel to the top bends. When I assemble a Romy non-G kit to them, the rails are 1/8-1/4" too low. Am I missing something here?

I lay a drill bit between the upper and lower rails to correctly position the rail distance then weld the lower in.  Forget about the holes, get the rail gap right first.

The rails are alligned to the trunnion not the holes in any brand of flat.

Yup.

Tapco flats are, and will continue to be, utter crap.

Curtis makes far better products than Tapco.  Use his flats from now on.  (yes, they cost more, but you actually get a quality product)

Brilliant.

Thanks for the head's-up.

Ditto what was already said. Rail height is set from the depth of the cut in the trunnion, and NOT by the pre drilled hole in the Tapco flat. My nephew found out the hard way as well on his build.

For those guys working with Tapco flats that like to fill the burrito before folding, make sure the lower rail height is measured from the trunnion cut and IGNORE the pre drilled holes for the crossmember support. You'll be re-drilling them after you weld them in, but they'll be in the proper location.

I also recommend AKBuilder flats, and anything else Curtis sells. Great stuff, great guy, and you wont go wrong using his gear.
