Coworker of mine was telling me about his friend's AK. There weren't a whole lot of details forthcoming but he was positive that it was stamped "Russia" somewhere on the rifle and would only accept 10-rd mags.

I'm not overly familiar with AKs and thought that only the Romanian WASR-10 was limited to 10-rounders... then did a GunsAmerica search and found several WASRs advertised as accepting hi-caps (I hate finding out I "know" less than I'd already suspected!). Yeesh.

Any ideas on what kind of rifle this might be?

Sounds like a Saiga hunting rifle.

There are plenty of Romanian AKs that came into the country that only accept 10 rd mags. Not sure right off hand if they are the Romaks, the WASRs or both. Someone else'll be able to clear this up--I don't have one. Alot of them have been milled out a little at the mag insertion to allow hicap mags. From what I understand it doesn't take much if you know what you are doing...

It would be a Saiga.  Russian 10-rounder stamped "made in Russia by Izhmash"

Missed the "Russia" stamp part.

Hm. Thanks for the info but now I'm wondering - if it's the Saiga hunting rifle, would it have been sold with an "AK-style" pistol grip or would it have been a standard hunting-style stock? From his pseudo-miming , it looked like my coworker was describing bump-firing the gun from the hip. Not that you *couldn't* do that, but it seemed like he was describing a pistol grip.

Or, hey, here's a thought: maybe I'll just ask him for a damned picture or go shooting with him.

Thanks again for the ejumacation.

It likely started as a hunter style stock, but can certainly be converted. Doing so opens up the US parts count issue.

Sounds like it's time for a little "don't ask, don't tell". Thanks again.
