Hi dark-siders, I'm building up an AMD-65 (as an SBR), and I have some concerns about terminal ballistics. This will be a "truck gun", and even with the tax stamp, it's cheaper than an AR. With an AR, though, I have a pretty good idea (thanks B&T ammo labs!) what to expect in the way of terminal ballistics above ~2700 FPS. My question is: what can I expect out of the AMD? I have heard 7.62x39 ballistics compared to .38 spl (because of lack of expansion). What does regular Russian FMJ ammo do out of a 12" bbl? What about a longer barrel? What are the velocities like? What ammo has better terminal performance? Since this rifle will be more for business than plinking, I'd like to know. Thanks much, fiz |

Don't know about how it'd be affected by your shorter barrel, but Lapua soft points and cheapo Winchester soft points expand very reliably and penetrate well (good for hunting, better than pretty much any other option 7.62 x39 has for terminal ballistics). Polymer-tipped bullets exist for this round, but I've never seen reports of how these perform in gel. Maine cartridge company loads Hornady's v-max, but I wonder if it would just fragment too quickly. Georgia Arms loads a Nosler ballistic tip in theirs, which seems a little beefier. I don't know if either of these bullets are .308 or .310/.311. |
I understand for ideal hunting rounds you want jacket and all to stay together, but for self defense against 2-legged predators, are they really going to notice the difference? BTW, the lead stuck together, it was only the jacket that seperated. |
| If you go to the sticky page in the ar15 forum and read the report on the ak74 there is a very good sentance that everyone seems to over look " all military style rounds that hit bone did extreme damage" I would think your odds of hitting bone in someone is really good. |
This is 5.45, not 7.62, right? |
