Anyone know if there is a threaded front sight base that will fit the SAR1(7.62) available on the market?

Thanks,
Richard

call k-var and check to see if the romanian ak-74 fsb will fit. if so, just bore the ak-74 brake to clear the larger 7.62 bullet.

but, i would suggest you buy an sar-2 and build an ak-74 clone! heheh!

Don't tempt me on the SAR2?  I want to get one bad, but I keep talking myself out of it because it would mean more magazines and ammo that I would have to add to "The Arsenal of Freedom" inventory and frankly the garage can't take anymore.

So far I have found at kvar.com a frontsight base with brake threads for $45, and the brake for $35. You then seem to need to bore out the brake for 7.62 which eliminates the chrome lining. At ak-103.com, they have a correct looking brake with a 7.62 bore for $38. There are choices for adaptor lugs to put on the bbl, either thread the bbl to attach the sight lug ( and silver solder/weld), or use the sleeved model to slip on the bbl and silver solder or weld the lug onto the bbl. Each is $10-15 for the part.
I am not sure which method at ak-103 is most likely to be perfectly straight when you are done, starting the bbl threads just right, or no slop in the sleeve. But either from them seems to be both easier and cheaper.

Bob, you care to chime in again?

And I can not recall which brake threads are the ones the BATF said are not required to be permanently fixed by weld or silver solder, due to non-fit with known evil attachments.

Just got off the phone with Chris at AK103, ordered the $38 brake and the $12.50 smooth ID adaptor for my SAR1. (yes the web site right now needs to change to show the right side adaptor for saiga, and center display for romy) While I would trust the threaded model to stay put better with less welding abuse on the bbl, he said that the sleeved ID model is more likely to be mounted absolutely in line with the bore. The sleeve model is tight enough to normally need a hammer to get on, and the threads tend to need a machine to start them just right for the other model. For the 2" of brake length, a few degrees not seen by the casual eye will make the bullet unhappy.
Range report in a week or so.

I've been looking for the same type of thing myself.  I'm not sure I understand what is involved in getting a brake on an sar-1.

Do you thread the barrel itsself in the threaded solution? or do you slip some sort of adapter over that and thread that?

I don't get it.  What products are involved?

if you are installing a 'big thread' (commie sixed 22 or 24mm) ak-74 style brake on an akm (sar-1)....

the sar-1 has a sight base journal diameter of .575" (14.60mm).

the sar-2 journal is .517" (13.13mm).

so, you could bore the sight base out to fit the sar-1.

as rs39 said, if using a 5.45 commie brake on a 7.62 rifle, the exit hole needs opened up a bit for bullet clearance. this does remove chrome plating in two small areas.

if using the usa parts, a 14mm x 1mm left hand thread adapter must be used. this also needs to be welded or soldered to the barrel for legality.

14x1 l.h. dies with arbor are available from sarco, tapco, aa-ok and global.
