Any tips on keeping (starting) the die straight when threading a bbl.? I bought a die and handle so I could thread a bolt-action rifle for a brake, and started it using a threaded bore guide. The brake still went on slightly crooked, but I'm not sure if it was my threading at fault or the brake itself. When threading the brake on, it doesn't wobble at all, showing that it's concentric. I had to grind one side of the muzzle opening about .02" to get equal bullet clearance all around. I guess the only right way is to cut the threads on a lathe.

to guide the die parallel to the bore axis, make or buy a threading arbor.

i made mine from a brass rod. i threaded it for about 3" with the die and only kept the last 1" of threads (dies are self straightening given enough cut length). i turned of about 6" of the rod to slip fit in the bore of the rifle.

hand starting the die onto the brass keeps it straight as it starts biting into the bbl. steel.
