You guys were so helpful with my last question, I will ask another.  I have been reading the disassembly sticky and it mentions a retaining spring that goes between the hammer pin and the trigger pin.  My polish underfolder does not have this but rather has some small "C" shaped clips that prevent the pins from backing out.  Is this a good thing or should install the retaining spring.  Also, I've noticed that my fire control group has an extra "something" next to the trigger that the hammer hits before it is captured by the sear or the disconnecter.  What is this thing?  Thanks again in advance.

No it looks like http://www.aa-ok.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_28&products_id=328&osCsid=babd5a2b73ca4ed252563f127bf4d2dd

In the process of finding that link I found the other thing that I was asking about.  It is called a "hammer retarder".  What the heck is that?

its the thing that goes in the full automatic AK's that slows the cyclic rate. It was an addition in 2nd generation AKs i believe. I assume it might have jsut been left in there for your build.

I'd prefer the c-clips over the wire retainer I have in my WASR like this.  It's the one that goes around the selector then the hammer/trigger pins - irritating to put in.  The other one like in my STG-2000C is like this.  It is easy to put in.  I took both my WASR and STG apart to clean them well and make sure I know how they work when I got each, is how I know how irritating the first kind is to install.  The best (judging on looks) seems to be the plate Mark posted above.  Tapco has it here.

Thanks again for your information. It is greatly appreciated.  I think I will purchase the plate for my parts kit just in case Murphy sees my "c" clips and causes one to fail.

Having helped build more AKs than I can count, I can vouch that the retainer plate is the best solution by a long shot.  It is actually a pretty sharp bit of reverse engineering, taking a feature from the FN FAL fire control group and applying it to the AK.  We use the retainer plates constantly, they come standard in all our builds.  Once you get used to them you'll never go back to the old Jesus spring.

We call them Jesus springs because they scratch the hell out of your newly refinished receiver while wiggling all over the place and not going where you need them to go.  Therefore you find yourself, uh, taking the Lord's name in vain repeatedly while trying to install your FCG.
