Probably between 2-4 moa. A particularly nice rifle with a scope could probably do 1 moa. As for caliber, that mostly has to due with the ammunition. There is no match grade 5.45x39 available, so you're either shooting surplus or cheap foreign loads. At least with 7.62x39, there is plenty of brass cased stuff so you could do handloads for accuracy and probably have a little more consistency. As far as I know, nobody has ever done an accuracy shootout between the various makes of AK. I think that'd be a pretty cool thing. I don't have enough guns otherwise I'd give it a shot myself. Arsenal Inc. generally makes the best AK's today, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to accuracy (especially considering some of the issues they've had with recent rifles). Now if some enterprising individual with a wide array of AKs from various countries would do some bench tests with handloads we could get a better idea of which barrels are the most accurate. But most people probably aren't too concerned about that when shooting AKs. |

On Sunday I took my Norinco Mak 90 (7.62) out after a long rest in the cabinet, grabbed a front sight adjustment tool and headed to the range. I was pleased as punch to dial in onto a paper plate and shoot a 2 inch group at 50 yards using Wolf FMJ ammo. Sure, my best recorded group with iron sights is .4 inches @ 100 yards with my SS match AR and handloads, but it just wasn't the same. |
| Polytech barrels were supposed to be air guaged for consistancy/accuracy...For what it's worth I have a polytech AKS with spike bayo. that shoots .5 MOA groups at a measured 50 meters..with chinese ammo... I still have that target, an NRA 25 yd. smallbore pistol target. I have yet to get a chinese AK that shot more than 3-4 MOA. |
Well, most AKs are either totally foreign made or assembled here from some foreign parts. Arsenal's guns are made in Bulgaria, which is probably the best AK factory in the world. Then they are modified with a few parts here when they come in to be legal in the US. There are a lot of factories around the world making AKs, you can enounter Chinese, Egyptian, Russian, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Yugoslavian, and if you were super lucky, perhaps an East German or Iraqi. But the closest you will get to an American gun is one that is assembled here from foreign parts. There are quite a few builders that do this. The quality of the gun depends on the quality of the parts they use (and their expertise). There are a number of parts being made in the US for AKs, fire control groups, furniture, muzzle attachments, barrels, receivers, but so far, nobody that I know of has ever made bolts, carriers, trunnions, etc. It's just cheaper to use foreign parts for those because there are so many of those parts being made overseas in military factories that build AKs. |

Of 6 AK's I've owned they are all pretty close, but if we're splitting hairs I'd group them as follows... BEST (less than 4 moa) - Milled Mak 90, Polytech AKS 762 AVERAGE (4-6 moa) - Bulgarian SSR-85C-2, Vector (Polish), Vector (Bulgarian) WORST (who knows) - WASR-2 Without a larger sample I wouldn't call it conclusive, but this was my experience. I would like to try a better quality 5.45 gun just to see how that does. |
Thank you. That was very informative. |
My Century Yugo holds 4 moa at 100 yards. Thats with 30 rounds through the Magazine. I don't do that 3 shot shit then call it a 2 moa. I want to see what a full magazine will pattern. Mine does 4 inch groupings. A Bulgarian I have does the same. |
| shot 3 moa at 100 yds with my wasr7.62.... hate if you want it still does the job, my interarms tantal 5.45 had 1.5 moa 100 yds, with no wind, 15 to 20 mph crosswind and it went to 3 moa. haha everyones results vary i think i just got lucky with my wasr. my siaga 7.62 in factory set up shot 2 moa everytime. |

Realistic expectations: Saiga .223: 2 - 3 MOA MAK-90 (7.62): 2 - 4 MOA Romanian G (7.62): 3 - 5 MOA Basically, expect accuracy on par with a Mini-14 and you'll be happy. Don't expect a "premium" AK to be any more accurate than a cheap one. Take a really close look at the threads in the Bulgarian forum if you are considering an Arsenal. |
