Hello! I located an adaptor block and underfolder stock that will allow me to turn my WASR-10 from a fixed stock rifle to a functioning underfolder stock rifle, but before I send out the money I would like a little advice first. In hunting online I noticed some posts from around 2000 stating that underfolders had to be fixed in either the folded or the unfolded position with a pin, so they could not be swapped back and forth. Did this provision expire with the sunsetting of the Scary Weapons Ban or would I need to ruin my underfolder as soon as I got it? If it won't fold I'll just stick with the nicely stained wood I spent so much time on. Also I noticed some metal side folding and underfolding stock kits saying that they could not be installed on a rifle made after 1984, while plastic side folding stocks right next to it have no such warning. I can't find any information as to WHY this warning would be in effect. Is that warning a hold over from The Scary Weapons Ban or does that have to do with parts count difficulties. Finding this underfolder adaptor has me all excited, as they seem to be vanishingly rare and will let me have all the goodness of an underfolder on a gun I've already worked all the kinks out of. Since I have a wife and kid I need to be sure I'm legal about this! I'm going to try to ask the ATF to be sure, but I have to jump on this and I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice. If you guys say Yea and uncle sam says Nay I'll just sell it again, no biggie. Ain't illegal to own the piece by itself! |

No worries on an UF. Since the 1994 ban expired in 2004, a fully functioning UF is allowed now. Now, as far as converting your WASR to an UF with one of those adaptor blocks, in my personal opinion, it looks like sh*t. These are the adaptors that stick out the rear of the receiver, right? IMO, the best and simplest way to turn something like a WASR into a folder is to pick up a Romanian side folder. They cost around $50. It's a simple plug and play conversion. |

You guys rock! It's good to know that I can buy this without it being a giant waste of my time. I'm not really looking for pretty so much as functionality, it just seems like it's going to be so much easier to hike around in the woods with it folded and only unfold it when I'm ready to hunt. I've seen some side folders and I don't really care for them. They look plenty solid and all, they just seem, well, kind of bulky when they're folded. Not to mention that I'm getting the underfolder and block plus two thumbhole stocks as a package deal for $45 shipped :) |
I was thinking about the same thing, I'll post again here when I get it and try it out. I kind of doubt that 30 round clips will work, but I think it should work fine with 10 round mags and the 20 round tanker mags. |
| Just so you know. You will have to cut or mill out a recess in the side folder to allow it to clear the selector lever when you install one with the adapter block. Also, the adapter blocks I have seen are for the Chinese underfolders. Just make sure the adapter is for the folder you are buying. |
Would that really be so bad? I always thought the stock was kind of short on my AK |
Yeah, the guy I'm going to buy this from said it came off a MAC90, does that mean for sure it's not going to fit in my WASR-10 come hell or high water? I was assuming that since from what I understand the MAC90 has a more slender reciever than a standard AK that I would have to shim out the sides of the adaptor block to the insides of my reciever. I was just going to disect a pop can and use the aluminum as a shim until it fit snug.. but if you're saying the tang the screws go through isn't compatable then I have to contact the guy and call it off. |
