Underfolder vs. Sidefolder

Is it just me?

Not that I’ve got a ton-o-experience with these things, but I really don’t care for the underfolding stock on an AK. I think it’s a little more compact and trim than a side folder, but to shoot from, no way. Putting my cheek on that thin little piece of metal just doesn’t seem right, it’s not… secure.

The side folder seems a lot more solid and seems like a good platform to shoot from. It’s a bit more bulky, adding some girth to the weapon when folded, but I’ll take that with the more solid shooting platform, rather than the underfolder.

I’m not looking to start any arguments or fights here, just wanted to see what everybody else thought.

Thanks, Chris

Chris,

One big advantage to a side folder is that it lock up nice and tight.  Underfolders have a tendancy to become lose and sloppy over time.

The idea behind a folder is to reduce the overall length so they are more compact and easy to handle in tight spaces.  Just my .02

Nope, you got it right.  The sidefolders, especially the newer style from Russia and Bulgaria, and the ones from ACE are much better shooting platforms.

I think Russia got the best of both worlds with the AK-74M/AK-100 Series side folding stock.

Yeah, but you gotta admit, them underfolders LOOK cool! LOL! J/K guys.

Similar situation to the HK's between the telescoping stock and side folder. Both the Telescopic HK and Underfolding AK stocks were designed to streamline the overall shape of their carbines, and while this is no doubt accomplished, it is at the cost of a decent cheek weld.

I'm just getting into building my 1st AK and have pondered over what stock to get and decided to go with the underfolder strictly on the basis of looks.

underfolders do look sweet.

But i agree, the cheek weld on an underfolder downright sucks compared to a sidefolder.

The underfolder has a definate cool factor, but it sucks in actual use. The Romanian and AMD side folders are not much better, if at all. The only folders I like for an AK are the ACE Galil style, the AKS-74 triangle, and the full stock type folders as found on some of the Saiga 12s. Personally, I have gone back to a good old Warsaw length fixed stock on my MAK-90.

I think the underfolders look very cool!

This is Kythri’s, it is a very accurate rifle, just not too fun to snuggle up to.

I posted a couple weeks back about an AKM style rifle with a sidefolder, I think that’s what I’m going to shoot for (pun intended). I was checking out ORF’s Yugo Krink kits and wondering (if they still have them) how much of a sin it would be to make one into a sidefolder rather than an underfolder.

Just a thought.

I agree that the side folder is a much nicer gun to shoot, but the underfolder sure is nice... I want this gun!

Personally, I think my Vector underfolder is much smoother to shoot and abosorbs recoil a hell of a lot better then my Romanian side folder.

The first folding stock kit I got is a Yugo Underfolder. The COOL factor can't be beat. Even if the cheek weld is the worst.

The second is a Tantal wire sidefolder.

Now all I need to find is this polytech folding stock and hand guards to add on to a Rommy kit.
I think this stock is the best of them all.

Under folder all the way. If you want a more comfotable gun go with a full stock, or ar-15. Compact, less bulky, everything right there, go with the underfolder. Sidefolders are nice, good to shoot, but the sidefolder seems to be in the way more when folded. Folders are supposed to be more compact and less bulky, go with the under, or do the smart thing and buy all 3.

See my earlier (and just updated) post:

Underfolder Post

A couple of issues are emerging re. the folder SAS vs. the fixed-stock SA. So far though, the cheek thing hasn't really been among them. The difference in the relation of the sight line to the positioning of the shoulder mount will likely be the deciding factor for me.

I really dislike underfolders and if your shooting a tubular style sidefolder in a larger caliber like 7.62x39 it needs some kind of padding. My Ace feels like it's going to crack my damn cheekbone after extended firing, LOL ...

Note that under and left folders keep you from mounting optics & folding.

My SAM7SF is hard on the cheek bone for irons, but works fine on the fatter part when I sight a bit higher for the 1-5x optic.
