| I am looking to buy an AK. I want quality and reliability. The other day I came across an article about the VEPR series. It sounds like the one I want. Any thoughts on the VEPR would be appreciated. |
| I've got a half a gun safe full of VEPR's and I love them. My K model .223 is the most accurate AK I own. They are a well built Kalasnikov "variant", not a true AK. The stock set is comfortable (but ugly) and I like the nose heavy feel of the heavy barrel. "AK built by HK". Good luck. |

the vepr is built by molot, the factory that assembles the rpk squad light automatic rifles for the russian army. on the plus side, they are of excellent construction, very accurate and finished nicely. drawbacks are overall weight, balance (as stated by hozer, some guys like it and some guys do not) and the styling of the furniture...which is, again, a very subjective call. imo, the biggest drawback to the vepr series, as imported/marketed by robarms, is the difficulties encountered in trying to restore the rifle into military configuration. if you can live with the looks of the vepr, i think you would be hard pressed to come up with better factory-built kalashnikov variant. overall, i rate them as among the best ever imported. |
When you speak of military configuration what do you mean??? Flash hiders and stuff? I heard that Mark Krebs and even Robinson Armament do modifications to make it LE only. |

I don't know the exact dimensions, but the barrel is not authetic. It's not 20" on a real 5.45 or 7.62 RPK. It's longer than that. Moreover, the stock is not right. You have to replace it, and Krebs does a conversion for this. The front sight base for instance is wrong, and that needs to be pressed off and replaced. The military RPK never did have a flash suppressor or any "assault rifle" features IMO. Russians use muzzle brakes, but I don't know if they found their way on 7.62 RPKs either. Campy would know more about the 5.45 RPK too. themao

JG Sales carries the VEPR line and you can add a brake for an additional $60: catalog.jgsales.com |
| I have heard before that the VEPR is the most accurate AK. I like that. Also the RPK receiver does have a different back to it. It is angled. From my understanding that is how it comes from the factory. What kind of muzzle brake does jg sales put on it? Robinson Arms has one that they offer for about $40 and they install it. Why is the other one so expensive? |
