I need a new AK in 7.62x39 and I want something with quality. Most AKs are reliable so I would like something with a little more accuracy. These are the AKs I'm looking at: Saiga conversion for $720 MAK 90 out of banned config for about $500 VEPR K=used for about $700=new for about $1000. The rest are from Atlantic firearms: Vector arms classic AK $585 Russian red by Lancaster $570 Russian AK47 high capacity sporter rifle (they look similar to VEPR) $630 Russian AK47 classic rifle $880 Bulgarian AK47 SSR with 1.6mm receiver $600 Has anybody had any experience with these last three rifles or know someone that has? I tried to add in all final cost for me like shipping and dealer fees. Pros and cons on all. I really want a VEPR and like the idea of having a real Russian made AK but is the extra accuracy over the rest worth the extra $$$? I mean how much more accurate can it be. I'm thinking the Bulgarian would probably have good accuracy for an AK. Just 2MOA is all I need, and I would like to save the $$$ if I can. All seem like good SHTF rifles. Thanks for the help. |
| I have a VeprII and it is accurate. I've never benched it, but it seems to do very well. I have recently been looking at Ak's and I am very disappointed in what you get for less than $500. Everything I look at seems to have a shitty finish/fit and they are too short. My $150 sks's seem to be of far more quality. I am in the same boat as you. I guess I will keep looking and hopefully find a good deal on a used one. |

From the list you provided ...Vector Arms Classic ... at least it looks like an AK. That Russian Red is not a Russian rifle. It is dye, stain, paint, whatever you wish to call it, used to stain or paint these stocks to resemble Russian stocks. Therefore: Russian red. To be honest, I would not buy any rifle from your list, when currently manufactured Arsenal SLR-107FR is available. |
I have a Vepr K and it does kind of spoil you. I paid $550 a couple years ago. Other AK's just dont seem as nice. |

Vectors are great AKs, and so are the VEPRs, the MAK 90 is built like a tank but you should not be paying more than $400 for one.......saigas are fantastic as well but there is no reason to ever pay $700-$800 for one, thats just rediculous.....you can buy them for $250 and convert it yourself if handy with tools. now out of the Vector and VEPR both are as accurate as the guy pulling the trigger.....both will serve you very well and are accurate, I had owned 2 VEPRs before and loved them, but the weight was always an issue for me.....they are heavy and I dont think I need a 9lb 762x39 rifle stock......the Vectors are about 7lbs, and yes 2lbs makes a huge difference especially once you add mag, ammo, and what ever other doo dads you plan on hanging off of it. The other big issue for me about the VEPRs is your selection of furniture.....it is extremely limited, with the Vector the possibilities are endless. Both great rifles but I like light and fast, and having my options open for adding what I like.....my vote is for the Vector |
Yeah, definitely that VEPRs weight is a downside... its only downside though. My yugo folding stock is my get home rifle, cuz i consider it light compared to a VEPR, crazy huh? |

I never got a Chicom to outshoot my 4moa SAR1.... If you want under 3moa (and I have not been blessed with everything to compare on the same day/skills/weather/ammo) VEPR or SAM7 at 2.5" when the Colt x39 upper is 2". The extra 1lb up front in the VEPR just stabilizes my off hand, while the SAM has the extra in the middle. |
