Greetings Guys,

I'm new to the board here and I  finally broke down and picked up a VEPR II in 5.45 X 39mm at a gun show.  I haven't got it out to the range yet.  I was wondering if any of you knew how their serial number system works.  I emailed Robinson arms over a week ago and received no response which is not encouraging (I'll call them if we cannot figure it out on this board).   For example, my rifle had a serial number of: 03 CC 79XX

Other VEPR K 5.45 @ 39mm models there had a serial number starting with 04 such as 04 CC 78XX.  Does the 03 prior to the CC in the serial numbers refer to year of production such that the 03 gun was made earlier than the 04 numbered model or do the very similar last four digits for both new guns mean they were produced around the same general time frame? I guess I'm asking what is the significance of the two numbers prior to the "CC" designation.

Thanks,
KK

WELCOME!

My VEPR K 7.62x39 serial number is 03 KK xxxx. I do believe the first two digits represent the year of production.

MIne is stamped with all four number from the year but from my understanding it is now done as biggerstick stated. the first 2 lone numbers are going to be the year of manufacture!

ETA: Welcome to the board and on buying the finest AK made

Thanks for the welcome guys and the responses.   I'm perhaps a little concerned that a new gun bought late in 05 could have been manufactured in 03?  I took it apart and there does not seem to be any significant amount of wear or tear.   There is also relatively large 04 marked on the left side receiver just above the magazine well.   I'll supply a range report when I get it out shootin!!!  If I fall in love with this gun,  I'll have to get a 20 incher in 7.62 X 39mm too.

Has anybody chronographed the 7.62 X 39mm with the longer barrel to see how much extra velocity they typcially provide compared to the standard 16.3 inch unit?

Thanks,
KK

KK, mine has the same 4 on the reciever. It's possible that is the year of manufacture or the year of import. I will try to call Robinson tomorrow and ask for sure. I doubt the 20" will make much difference in the velocity sine the 7.62x39 was designed for a 16" barrel.

I would not dwell on the year of manufacture. New is new and is not car waiting on the next model year to come out. Robarms has said in the past it is 9+ month lead time to get guns out of Russia if not more. Russian customs plays a game waiting on bribes and kick backs to expidite release items for export. Robarms just let's them sit on them and eventually they release them.

I called Robinson today and was told they don't know which number if either represents the year of production.

An official point of view of MVD OLLR (Russian police unit running gun registrations), in 03CC1234:
- 03 is year of production (i.e. 2003),
- CC is series,
- 1234 is number.
