WASR 3, are they worth getting or am I just looking for trouble?

It all comes down to price. There is not anything wrong with them that cannot be fixed.

What are their common problems?

The WASR-3's that were imported up until 2009 were notorious jam-o-matics.  On many of these, the magazine catch was filed down too much.  It didn't help that Century shipped these with a converted 5.45 mag that was not native to the rifle.

I haven't seen any problems reported with the post-2010 WASR-3 imports.

And in any regard, WASR-3's need to use Weiger mags in order to function reliably.  I'm not sure what current availability is on these mags, but at one time they were $30+ each.

If you're interested in a 5.56 AK, the Arsenal SLR-106 is a reliable weapon.  Unfortunately, it will also cost 2x what WASR-3's run  There are other reliable 5.56 AK's (Chinese, Yugo, etc.), but they each use proprietary magazines that are expensive and sometimes difficult to find.

Well, this is just my opinion, but for about the same price, you can get a .223 MAK90. As for the Norinco mags, they pop up on the EE quite often. For about the same price as a WASR-3 and some Weiger mags, I think this would be the better option. A few months ago, I found 8 of the Norinco .223 mags a gunshow that I got pretty cheap, and had to get a Norinco .223 rifle to go with them! So far, I have put 300 rounds through it with no problems at all. Of course, there is the SLR, but you would have to put out some extra $$$ for it.

Look around for a SAR-3 if you want a good .223 AK.  Mine has been flawless and accurate as hell.  Weiger mags are the standard mags that work correctly in the SAR-3 and WASR-3, and if you get lucky like I did you can run Bulgy Circle 10's and modified EG bakelites too.
