I have in the past had a Maadi, 2 different SAR-1, and a 5.45x37 Rom.  My question is, are the WARS still to be avoided if possible. I am in the market for an AK, and all I can find locally, are WARS's ...
Have they improved any???

They're still rough and ugly, but I got one 4 or 5 months ago and it goes bang every time I squeeze the trigger, takes every kind of magazine I have to throw at it, and usually hits what I'm aiming at with it.

WASR's are perfectly fine if you thoroughly inspect them before buying.

Thanks....I wanted to make sure...looks aren't important, just the working order...

For shooting they are usually as good as any other stamped AK.  And perhaps even more enjoyable than nicer AK's since you don't have to baby it.  It's not a collectors item or expensive.  No painted finish to worry about chipping.  If it gets scratched - so what?

My Romanian AK runs 100% and has for thousands of rounds.  I haven't replaced anything on it short of the recoil spring with an extra power one from Wolff.  And that was just to see if it made any difference shooting it.

It didn't.
