AK blows up
12/17/2010 12:11:12 PM EDT
[#1]
Either a squib or a headspace problem.  No way to know without detailed pictures of the rifle.

It really could be either a bore obstruction or headspace issue because it looks like somebody has been doing some sandbox gunsmithing on  it.

Edit: if you pause the video at just the right time you can see the trunnion ripped completely out of the receiver.

The last time this was discussed the possibilities ranged from no barrel pin installed allowing the headspace to lengthen, squib, sabotaged ammo, etc.

The biggest thing that I see as being wrong is that the shooter survived.

Squib.

Could happen to any full auto rifle.

I just can't see a squib building enough pressure to cycle the rifle.  It's possible, but on a gas operated rifle like the AK, improbable.

Could it have fired out of battery?

I would think that an out of battery fire would blow the dust cover off and hit the operator in the face, not blow the whole gun apart.  I assume that the energy in a smokeless powder load that small, without being highly contained could not do that much damage.  My guess would be some kind of explosive loaded in the casing, much hotter than the intended smokeless powder load.  There are lots of blowing up AK videos online.  Kinda scary stuff.

When I first saw the vid, I wondered if maybe there is a new "Eldest Son" operation going on...  It wouldn't surprise me.

I think the AKs blowing up are due to the way some of them are maintained, and or built in 3rd world holes. Haven't seen many (really haven't seen any) videos of AKs blowing here in the US....

Good, consider yourself not surprised.

There was in-Theater but that wasn't part of it.
