I have read (somewhere) about some problems using either JHP or HP in AK's.

I have 2 Pre-Ban Chinese AK's and 4 Wolf HP Sardine cans in my ammo stash.

Are the problems ammo related? AK related? Both?

I really dont want to open my SHTF stash to test it. (or should I?)

any input appreciated

I'd just pick up some boxed HP from another source. No need to bust open a 640 round can in my opinion...you should be able to find a place to buy a half case of boxed ammo...

HP shouldn't be a problem, I've got three 7.62 AKs that eat it just fine, and I've never seen any other AKs that had a problem with it. I've heard of a few people having some feeding issues with HP though. I would want to test each rifle with HP before I 100% trusted it.

I have an NHM-91 (ban-era Chinese AK) that is a little slow feeding HP's.  They hang up a bit and the action isn't as smooth as it normally is when shooting.  Occasionally one will cause a feed jam.  A friend with another NHM-91 has the same sort of issues but gets more jams since he has weak mag springs and I don't think the round is presented high enough at feeding time.  My Maadi feeds them just fine.

Get a couple boxes and test, it's the only way to know for sure.

if you have problems, just file and polish the ramp a little.

Noooooo!  Put the tools down, and have a gunsmith that knows AKs look at It.  Any other option is a gamble.  Seriously.

Two of my AKs had trouble with HP ammo. In both the HP tip would catch on the edge of the feed ramp and snag there like a hang nail at the tips edge. Neither feed ramp had any real chamfer to it like my other AKs had. They would feed fmj and sp ammo fine. Only HP would hang up.

The solution is to put a small round diamond burr in your dremel. I used 1/8" dia. burr. Leave it sticking out some for best reach. Go in from the magwell with it and kiss the edge of the feed ramp back & forth evenly from edge to edge to chamfer it slightly. Don't just chamfer in the middle! A double stack has to feed from both sides! So just chamfer it back & forth about 1/32" deep so that the edge of the HP ammo won't snag  there anymore. Then rub with fine emory cloth to smooth it afterwards. Cold blue will touch it up.

That cured it in both of mine. Simple fix.

All my AKs work as they came from the factory with HPs.
I'm not a huge fan of Dremil WECSOG projects, but if you have an AK that doesn't feed HPs and feel you want to try and Dremil it, here is where the bullet rides on the "feed ramp". You can usually see where copper from the jacket has built up from the bullet dragging over the "feed ramp".

The above pic is from my 100% functional WASR feed ramp. It's as it came from the factory.

Excellent visual!

That IS a properly chamfered ramp. The two I had problems with both had nearly a 90 degree edge. My other AKs that all work fine with HP ammo have ramps like yours there.

Well, if you fixed the rifle with a Dremil and managed to NOT bugger it up in the process, you have earned your associates degree in Dremil Modification from the WECSOG.

Congratulations.

i had a problem with my wasr feeding the occasional wolf mc hp... i used a dremel and did to my feed ramp exactly what the above picture looks like, and it has been 100% since.  just take a little off and get rid of that 90 degree corner...its not too hard, and you really can't screw it up...

I was a nuc plant mechanic in the Navy for 20 years. Then I went to machine shop and welding classes after that.
Hell, in middle school we had metal shop and mechanical drawing and even machine shop and brazing training. We weren't even in high school yet! (1970's.)
The level of work needed to assemble a AK was what USED to be considered middle school level shop class stuff!
I don't know what our country has come to. A bunch of useless cubicle dwellers who watch American Idol.
Makes me feel like a dinosaur.
Wetsog indeed.

This is simple stuff. No sweat.

It really bothers me that folks like me are now the exception vice the rule skill wise.
