I've always thought that an AK in that caliber would be the bee's knees. My main question is, what kind of mags did it use?

Quoted: Spent the last couple days on the range with a new rifle from Krebs Custom actually a prototype chambered for 6.5mm Grendel. It's basically an AK-74 pattern rifle but with his rail over the top cover. Barrel weight is the same as factory. Pretty cool rig. You can hammer stuff up close, like a standard AK. Recoil is a bit milder than 7.62x39mm, but very close. I ran it on steel out to 300 yards and then stepped out to 550 yards. Impressed I shot groups at 550 yards. Thing is holding 2 MOA at 550 yards with Wolf's 120 grain MPT load. I had one box left so stepped it out to 800 yards. Target was an 11.5x20 inch LaRue sniper target. I calculated the elevation and let fly. The wind was gusting quite a bit but I flattened the LaRue on my 3rd shot. Then did it two more times in a row before I missed a wind change. I scored 7 hits at 800 yards.....with an AK. Pretty nice day today...... What type of mag did the rifle use? |
|
Very impressive, thanks for taking the time to share.
So...how do we get one? Z |

This rifle is set up to accept the 6.5mm Grendel AR mags,
Bolt locks back and everything. article will appear in our next G&A Book of the AK47 annual An AK is a logical choice for the 6.5mm Grendel. Pretty slick combination. |

Also, others have had problems with the trunnions cracking where they were relieved for the AR mags. Just something to watch for with the AR mag conversions. |

I love the 6.5 grendel, but lack of availibility and high prices kills it.

Whens the next book of the Ak out? I really wish it would become as a regular magazine.

Come on, an AK that is accurate. It is not April 1st. The AR community would be crapping bricks at such an animal. We would never hear the end of how bad the AK is, how bad pistons are, and how great .223 really is we just don't know it.
Really cool rifle, cant wait for the article. By the way, the Book of the AR and AK should be bi annual. Quarterly would be nice but maybe pushing the writers too much. (be glad to send a query for article submissions!) However, the Book of the 1911 should be weekly. Also, I like the lengthy articles in Shotgun News, but how about more articles per issue. There is a ton of ads in that publication. |

Shotgun News, due to page size, has the longest articles in the industry, but will always remain a trade publication at heart. thanks for the input! |

Interesting looking magwell, looks like an AR magwell on an AK. I'm surprised nobody thought of this idea sooner now that I think about it. 6.5 and 7.62x39 share the same bolt head, so a conversion should be as simple as a magazine and barrel.

Marc is working on the design so that the mag release will be similar to an AR so you can kick the empty mag out with your trigger finger. Plus it will have a bolt release. He is licensed by Alexander Arms to build Grendels, sure there will be more to follow. Perhaps even traditional AK pattern mags....... You have to crunch some numbers to see just how badly the 6.5mm Grendel with its super efficient projectiles smokes the 5.45 and 7.62x39mm and of course the 5.56. The Grendel has more energy at 500 yards than the 7.62x39mm has at 200 yards. Yet the cartridge is no bigger or heavier than the 7.62x39mm. In this case there is a free lunch.... |

Good stuff, ship it to me and I will kill a dozen does with it for you.

Nice rig so I take it the brass is too damaged to reload? don't worry...I collected the brass.... |

Your picture looks familiar so I've gotta ask; are you the shotgun news guy?

Duh , stupid me. I never read the names, I just read the articles. I mainly buy those magazines for the ads in the back and read the articles periodically .

Thanks for the picture it's not as ugly as I expected. It may have a spot in my collection

Nice rig, exciting project, and nice shooting there.
Some Q's: 1. Barrel length & Blank's Mfg? 2. CroMoly CL/not-CL or blackened Stainless? 3. Twist and #Grooves? 4. Did you shoot any x39 converted brass or steel loads thru it? 5. The pic name "Krebs65x38mmGrendelAK" - does this indicate a shorter neck and/or a longer throat for the longer projos? |

Quoted:
2 moa at 550 yards? Sweet Lord! That's better than an 11" group |

I wasn't given much for specifics on the barrel. 16 inches, stainless with 1-8 inch twist I only shot factory loads through it. 6.5x38mm is the proper designation for the Grendel cartridge. So the case length is slightly shorter than a 7.62x39mm. The Grendel was based on the .220 Russian ETA: I have shot a bunch of x39 converted brass and STEEL cases in my Grendel ARs. I would expect an AK to run fine on it just like an AR. |

Wow, if there was ever such a thing as a "perfect AK", this would be it. (Assuming that inexpensive ammo you mentioned becomes available.)
For the most part, I've already relegated my 7.62x39 AK's to the back of the safe. This rifle would be the death kneel to those AK's. Any idea of whether there are serious plans to bring this to market, or is it just a project gun for now? |

Bill Alexander and Marc Krebs have known each other for a number of years now. Marc has had a lot on his plate but is very excited about this project. He is licensed and would be the first to bring licensed Grendel AKs to market. But Bill is working on MUCH bigger fish who are very interested and things are looking very good. Or at least that is what I am hearing. |

If ammo became cheap, I would be all over this like a fat kid on a cupcake.

Hi, Dave.
I wanted to take the opportunity to say thanks for putting the AK platform out there, to give it the more positive recognition that it deserves. However, I think there's a long way to go. I have to admit that I'm kind of sick of seeing AR this and AR that and how certain gun shows seem to be focusing on how the AR is so widely accepted nowadays, even among some of the "Fudds". On one hand, I think it's great that more people are accepting these "evil black rifle" for what they are, but on the other hand, it's kind of maddening to not see more of the same about the AK. Given the average price of the AK platform, I'm willing to bet that there are just as many in civilian hands as there are AR type rifles. Now, it's time to let the public know it. That's where guys like you come in. |

I pushed hard to make it happen, and readers have made it a success. So we just keep pushing. I've done quite a few TV segments on the AK and am always trying to do more. BUT it's people like you writing in and pushing which make things happen. |

Made the rifle easy to shoot but was awful in low light. I am not a fan of Kreb's top rail either and I agree on the folder. BUT remember. This is nothing more than a first prototype to just test the cartridge in this platform. It performed much better than expected. |

what did you find lacking in the Krebs Top Rail and have you tried the TWS top rail?

what did you find lacking in the Krebs Top Rail and have you tried the TWS top rail? The Krebs top rail worked fine. It certainly provides a very stable mount for a magnified optic. But I am just not a top rail kinda guy. I'd just prefer something a bit simpler. |
