Howdy,

Can any of you fellas take a couple measurements of some ammo & mags you might have at your fingertops?  I am curious about basic cartridge dimensions of 7.62x39, 5.45x39, & 5.56 (.223).  Just the O/A cartridge length, & diameter of the case body.  & what are the dimensional differences between the feed ends of 47 & 74 mags?  Will they physically interchange?  I've just got some ideas swirlin' around.

Much obliged,
Matt

Thanks No1,

  Good page!

Jake, you are correct - plenty of good sites for ammo specs.  Mag specs are not quite so easy to find.

Anyone know if 74 mags fit in a 47 magwell?  What about Galil mags?  Any of you fortunate arsenal owners ever checked for interchangeability between models?

Thanks all,
Matt

The Reload Bench used to have cartridge drawings here.  Apparently they're offline right now, but you might check back occasionally.  I have the 5.56x45 and 5.45x39 images on my computer.  If you're interested I can e-mail them to you or, if you'd prefer, I can post the dimensions here.

Edit: Just reread your post.  Overall cartridge length for 5.45 is 57.5mm (2.264 in.), and diameter is 10mm (.394 in.) at the base and 9.4mm (.370 in.) at the base of the shoulder.  For .223 Remington those measurements are respectively 57.4mm (2.260 in.), 9.6mm (.378 in.), and 8.99 mm (.354 in.).

Thanks pomofo,

Now if I can just find someone to put their caliper to the mags...   Matt
