I just picked up a M70AB2 kit . It was issued and I don't know jack about the barrel condition . Someone said something about a bullet test whats this about ? Also where can I get a new barrel for this in case this one is junk ? I only payed $125.00 for the kit , its all there and seems to be in very good shape on the out side atleast .

Thanks for any help here

good score on the kit price, thats a steal now a days

First step is to visually inspect the bore with a bore light. they are just little $5 flashlights that can be shined down the barrel enabling you to see the condition its in. The questions to ask yourself are is it rough, pitted, dirty, are the lands and grooves still sharp?  If it needs cleaned do that first.

The bullet test is where you take an appropriate round (7.62x39) and put the tip of the bullet into the muzzle end of the barrel.  You see how far it will go in before it encounters resistance.  The less the bullet can go into the barrel, the less its theoretically worn.  If it swallows the bullet, as in it allows the whole bullet to go into the barrel without resistance, then the barrel is very worn.

Unfortunately the bullet test is a rough guide at best. Newer barrels with little wear can shoot like crap, and worn out ones can shoot like a tackdriver.  No way to know until you try and shoot it––

You are going to have a harder time finding a M70 barrel than you might think-

Centerfire used to have used barrels for cheap ($15 IIRC) but they were #1 crap bores, and #2 are long gone.  No other usual dealer seems to have any at the time.  You still see one or two pop up rarely in the EE or the likes, but they ususally go very fast when they do-

The other option is to get a virigin barrel. m70 Virgin Barrel Its going to cost you a bit, but its also brand new. Also be very aware that its a lot more work and cost to get a virgin barrel put in place because the holes are not pre-drilled.
