so the new mak i bought for cheap has a few surprises. first it is a straight cut reciever! SWEET

second it has a standard butt stock installed. the previous owner said he converted it over. he didnt have any receipts and the parts on the gun are not stamped.
it came from a reputable guy. so am i safe? gun will just be used for plinking at a small range.

what do you guys think? if i do get checked (for some reason) and i plead that i bought it that way/didnt know will that stand up?

If it was my gun I think I would replace the stuff with stamped USA marks on them. In most case, with assault rifles, your GUILTY until proven innocent. I got the same thing on my FN/FAL I built. It's got all the usa parts on it but most of it it not marked. DSA was good for not marking their stuff early on. But I kept my receipts.

Just a thought, look at your hammer and see if it's COPPER in color. If it is, that's still a Chinese part and probably the sear and trigger might be Chinese also. Is the furniture US made? Pics??

i dont have any pictures yet. how would you tell if the wood was US/foreign made? ill also check the trigger assembly tomorrow.

now to play the devils advocate...
if i had any reciept/invoice from company X that listed a few parts as US made would that work?

what if that company isnt in business anymore, but i have that reciept?

The whole "reputable" guy thing doesn't mean sh*t.  It won't matter to an overzealous federal prosecutor.

Do I think you're safe?  No, not particularly.  Like Elbow said, err on the side of being overcautious with regard to compliance with federal firearms laws.

History is awash in examples of ordinary, generally law-abiding, well-intended people being f-d by our own government.  But who knows, you could get lucky and it's never an issue.

Some wood will actually say "Made in Bulgaria" or something like that stamped on the inside (of like handguards).

I suppose if you did have receipts, and an item is generally known to come from a certain place (like Elbow's example of DSA FAL stuff) and you can PROVE it, then that would make me feel a bit more comfortable.  But it's still not piece of mind....

Bottom line is, if whatever item you have is not marked "Made in USA" - then it's going to be much more difficult for you to PROVE that it is in fact not foreign when you're under the gun so to speak.  Whether that's right or wrong is irrelevant, as it'll be your ass on the line.

An easy fix would be to check the more commonly replaced compliance parts for "USA" or "Made in USA" or something to that effect.  If you can't find anything, then get a Tapco G2 trigger group (3 parts) and some US-made "Pro Mags" or whatever (3 parts) and just use those.  Count up your foreign-made stuff and you should be ok then.
