By Jove I think I've got it:

AK rivet location                     P/N           Part description                cost

rear trunnion "rivets"         8893K26          11/64 steel rod,  6'         2.51
handguard/front trunion    97300A105        300qty 5/32 rivets          7.76
Center support rivet          97300A675        75qty 3/16 rivets            5.54
Center support bushing     9220K32          steel tube 6'                    8.21

Total                                                                                         $24.02+shipping

less than what I would pay for the three rivet sets I need, plus I'll have plenty of leftovers...

for the rear trunnion, my plan is to crush the rod with two steel plates that have hemi-spheres.  I'm pretty sure I can do that with my bench vice.

what say you?

www.mcmaster.com is our friend.  Thanks for the hard work.

rear trunnion "rivets" 8893K26 11/64 steel rod, 6' 2.51

That seems like it might be a little too hard but let us know how it works. Rivets are pretty soft.

from mcmaster:

Hardness: Rockwell B89-B110
Yield Strength: 50,000-99,000 psi
Annealed
Diameter  Tolerance
0.0625"-0.1200" ±0.0003"
0.1250"-0.4844" ±0.0005"
0.5000"-3.0000" ±0.001"

Meet ASTM A681. Also known as drill rod. Can be heat treated to a maximum attainable hardness of Rockwell C57-C62. Straightness tolerance is 0.005" per foot. Length tolerance is ± 1/4". Rods with diameters less than 0.5000" are sold in 3-ft. lengths. Rods with diameters 0.5000" and larger are sold in 1-, 3-, and 6-ft. lengths.

that works out to ~1000-2000 lbs to yield an 11/64 inch rod...maybe I'll use my 12 ton press...

of course it could be brittle

then there's this: 5227T13 ~60000 psi, but still probably to hard...
ETA or this:         8984K95 ~35000 psi, but 5/32".  What is the diameter of the rear trunion rivets supposed to be?

the other option I see is grinding down a 3/16" rivet, but that seems tedious.

I use the 3/16" rivets and reshape the head to match the front rivets. Then drill out my turnion to match.
