how do you tell where it came from by looking at it? ( russian , chinese etc) and what is the better manufactor?

By manufacturing markings

Most kits/rifles have some type of marking on the left side of the front trunion or receiver that aids in identification. To the best of my knowledge here are some things to look for:
Russian - fletched arrow in triangle
Polish - circled 11
Bulgarian - circled 10
Hungarian - just serial number (different front HG retainer)
Romanian - nonfletched arrow in triangle or receiver marked "Made in Romania"
Chinese - typically marked "Norinco" on left of receiver

There are some other things to look for as well if they are in their original form.

As far as the "Better manufacturer", to each their own. I have at least one of each of the above and I am pleased with them all.
