My brother and I were shooting his SKS today and had a malfunction after a couple shots.  When you pull the trigger, it doesn't release the hammer.  I pulled the trigger group out of it and couldn't see anything obviously wrong with it, but I couldn't get it to release the hammer.  The trigger goes through the full range of motion, but it's just not letting the hammer go.

Any ideas what to check?

the trigger group will not go off outside of the gun the gun must be completly assembled with the bolt foreward for the hammer to drop

The bolt follower/disconnector prevents the hammer from falling with the bolt out of battery. If you push this down slightly, it will allow a trigger pull to release the hammer.
BE WARNED... the hammer can really hurt exposed digits in its quick release (don't ask me how I know). Hold the hammer and feel it release.

Are you sure that the bolt was completely closed? The function of the disconnector is to prevent the rifle from firing out of battery.

Sometimes a piece of crap or blown out pimer gets stuck under the sear, it's hard to see when it's in there. I've had it happen, same thing, everything appears ok but the hammer won't drop.  I take the trigger group out and tap on a piece of wood to clear it.
