how many ak's and variants do you think are in the country? my guess would be around a hundred thousand or so. what do you all think from when they were first imported to now.

After seeing crates of Chinese AKs stacked up at relatively small local gun gun shows in the '80s, I'd say your guess is LOW.
Only BATFE knows for sure

I'd imagine it's VERY high.  Literally TONS of AK kits mostly turned into built rifles by now and imported rifles have saturated the US in past years.  That, and all the pre-ban rifles that were imported since the 1970's, would make quite a large amount.

'87 through '94 they were pre-ban configuration, '94-2004 they were thumbhole, 10 round, welded barrel nut or comp, then 2004 until now homebuilt, imported, domestic....so we have had 22 years of them coming into the country and being locally produced, if you say it is convservatively 1000 per year per state (where allowed) you come up with say 45K per year times 22 years, that gets my number pretty close to 1M conservatively, and no, ATF doesn't even know, they never hear about the private homebuilt ones from kits since they were never identified in any way....I suspect 1M is low....

The BATFE knows exactly how many kits entered the country. The importer had to have clearance to import the kits. In fact, without the clearance to import the kits, the importer would not have been able to buy the rifles in the first place.

they certainly know the number of kits, but they have no idea how  many went to personal builds Vs some builder completing a NODAK, Vs. somebody holding one for spare parts, Vs. the ones being stock piled for future builds, my point was with all the popularity of home builds on this specific rifle, ATF has no idea how many completed and functional legal AK's actually exist in this country...

They definately don't know the exact number of completed/built rifles out there.  There's really know way they could.  A BATFE representative even commented on the fact they don't know last year in an interview.

For their purposes 1 kit = 1 rifle.
They don't care if the rifles exists now or is being held for a "future build". It's an AK. They don't want you to have it, and they do what they can to keep you from getting it.
