Ober and I were able to compare 3 AKs for recoil and muzzle flip yesterday. A SAR1 with a 2-chamber 74 style brake from ak-103.com, a MAK 90 with the Chinese pin-on brake that has 4 holes directing gas to the front paddles and 2 holes directing gas up, and a plain SAR1. All have similar weights/stock profiles, were fired with Yugo milsurp ammo, seated at a table using the 30rnd steel mag as a rest, holding with just the right hand, and the shoulder leaned in to the buttstock. One fired 3 shots, not rapid fire, and the other observed.

The plain bbl SAR moved back about 2" and up about 3/4". The MAK moved back about 1" and up about 1/2". The SAR with the 2 chamber 74 brake moved back about 1/2" and up maybe 1/4".

Not a slow motion video with a graph in the background to measure motion, but a nice comparison of brakes for the 7.62x39 round.

We also started the ammo test, with lots of ammo in 5 shot groups with 2 shooters and several AKs. There is a lot of paper to sort out before the finals round expected next week.

sorry i couldn't stick around for the ammo testing...i was looking forward to it. duty called, unfortunately.

i have observed other folks shooting my romanian ak-74 with the factory '74 brake. although highly unscientific, i am always impressed at how little the muzzle moves.

I was impressed at how well the breaks worked with the 7.62 round.  They were designed for the 5.45 round and work great for it, but I questioned the effect on the 7.62.

The Ak-USA break RS39 was using worked VERY well.  I was equally surprized to see how well the cheap $10 pin on MAK break worked.  It lacks the expantion chamber of the other breaks, but did seam to be 50% as effective as the much better break. Other than cleaing issues aside with the pin on break, I would recomend it.

The AK-USA break was impressive for the price as well.  I would recomend either.

It really makes me admire the designers.  Its match with the 5.45 round is perfect.

Campy, In all honesty, I'm really glad you couldn't stay. RS39 will explain our...........er......MY stupidity to you in person.
