I've seen worse, lot worse. But its normal. Its from the tail hitting the hammer as the carrier goes back. It may have already been there depending on how much the original rifle was used prior to being demilled. This. I would have given a better response but I'm pretty doped up on oxycodine right now. Damn ankle. |

Oh, it does. I'm just thankful that it isn't broken. I think OPs gun is OK, but you sir....have an issue. Your ankle has malfunctioned. I recommend synthetic/organic opioid analgesics. Now....I'm no Dr. but I've seen them on......TV So....I know what I'm talking about (get better soon) |

I was shocked when I noticed the same wear/peening in both of my FEGs. Apparently it is normal, as they said. The only good thing you can say for it is, the larger the area of the flattened tail, the more force is distributed/negated. That means it should get to a certain size and stop growing, or grow very slowly. If you work the carrier with a de-cocked hammer you will see that there is ample material on that tail-piece that could be lost before the bolt tail hits the hammer - probably more rounds than the life expectancy of the barrel.
In the engineering sense, you could guess that the carrier tail was not hardened because they did not want it to wear material off or deform the hammer - just another compromise in the design of a firearm or anything else. |

If you're concerned about it, get a BufferTech recoil buffer, it'll give your bolt carrier some standoff from the rear trunnion and it'll cushion the recoil a bit. It's not the rear trunnion that's causing that damage. Also, buffers don't cushion recoil at all. If there was ever an item that I slap myself for ever buying in the past was an AK recoil buffer. |
| In all my time on AK forums i've never know that to be normal wear.Ive seen and bought a few used surplus carriers and none have looked like that. Think of this situation, if there was an out of battery condition that "tail "would keep the hammer from hitting the firing pin, less tail more chance of hitting the firing pin. |

That area doesn't come into contact with anything but the hammer, and then only during the recoil cycle, to cock the hammer. I can't imagine what would cause that amount of peening. But I've never personally seen anything like that. |
