My Yugo M72 RPK has no side scope mount.  What is the best product out there for scoping an AK I can do myself that will retain accuracy and is strong.

OR

Should I send it away to have a side mount added?  If so who would you reccommend?

Thanks

I don't have experience with the side mount retrofit, but I did mount a scout mount from www.scoutscopes.com in place of the original rear sight on my Romanian. I have not mounted a scope on it, but I did mount a Burris Speed dot. So far it seems to be pretty stout, and hasn't moved. It also has a rear sight milled into the base so you'll have a backup iron should the scope/red dot break. Obviously this mount won't work with a regular scope, as the eye relief is too great, but it will work well for an Eothech or other style of speed sight, or an extended eye relief scope. I'm also going to try the UltiMak scout mount on my Yugo UF when they complete one for that application. You might want to check them out as well.

I recently installed a scope side rail on my SLR 106.  I got it from Tantals; the model is the MPK2:  http://www.tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/rail_install.html  shows the instructions.  You might email Tantals to make sure it will fit.  The rail kit bolts on from the inside of the receiver.  You drill three holes with a 3/16" drill, and bolt the sucker on.  I put some blue locktite on and it feels very solid.  Considering the quality of the bolts, I can't see why it would not equal the strength of a rivet.  Good luck.
