Just picked up a Vepr in 7.62 and know nothing about these guns. I'm a Colt AR collector. My question is, will 30 rnd ak-47 magazines work in this gun and if so which brand should I look for. Also what ammo do these guns like for general plinking? Any other general comments about the gun would be appreciated.

it will work with any 30 magazine you can find, East german, chinese, hungarian, bulgarian, russian, romanian, etc.
And various drums will also work with the gun, chinese, romanian, and russian.

You should just buy the cheapest mags you can for the time being, East germans can be had for decent prices, but I would also pick up a few bulgarian mags while I can,

Look thru our Magazine section for more details on how to identify different mags.

Congrats on the new gun great purchase! As stated above it will use all standard ak mags and drums. But stay away from promags, they dont work in anything! And I havent seen any ammo that it wont spit out. Check out the russian forum below for more info. Or www.AK47.com for the robarms website. Both have alot of info and knowledgeable people to answer any questions!

Welcome to the club
As far as ammo goes, it'll eat basically everything that looks like a 7.62x39
