Some day I'll get around to building my first-ever flat receiver. I've done several builds on pre-made receivers so I'm pretty comfortable once I get the receiver ready. However my main question is this:

Do I spot-weld the rails on then heat treat, or heat treat THEN spot weld the rails on?

Thanks.

Some spot weld then heat treat & others that are going to heat treat the whole receiver have the rails welded in when they heat treat.
I heat treat the rails, spot weld them in, then heat treating the axis pin holes.
Actually the only part of the rails that has to be hardened is the ejector tang, just be careful to not get the spot welder tong against the ejector tang when you spot weld. Because you could be reheating the ejector tang & removing the hardness.

Harden the ejector tip on the left rail and then weld the rails in. You are not to heat treat the whole receiver or the entire rail segment. Doing either is asking for more trouble than it is worth.
