I Finally got my Burris Speed Dot in and had a chance to get it out to the range!
Not only was I at the range, but I was there with a few sights to compare to.
My selection that day was:
Sight...
Dot size.....
MountAimpoint M2..4 MOA ARMS #22M68 w/ cantilever spacer
Aimpoint M3 2MOA ARMS #22M68 w/ standard spacer
Burris Speed Dot 3MOA ARMS #22M68 w/ standard spacer
Hakko Tacpoint 4 MOA KAC copy
Also on hand was my Aimpoint 3x in a Samson Quick Flip mount
First impressions:
The Burris Speed Dot is a well made optic. The lens covers are not as well made as the Aimpoint covers, but a little more stout than the Tacpoint ones.
The adjustment dial turns in both directions and is mounted on the left side of the sight. [Nigel] This one goes to eleven [/Nigel]One thing I really like about it is the fact that you can adjust brightness levels without removing your strong hand from the pistol grip. One thing I did not like so much was the fact it was a little hard to turn.
The windage and elevation adjuster caps screw down securely and are attached to the sight body by a three point rubber strap. The third point is attached to one of the flip up lens covers. This makes sense because removing both covers for adjustments means you loose both if they are not secured to something you won't remove.
The objective lens is red just like an Aimpoint is. A killflash will not fit even though the lens is threaded.
The Speed Dot has blue tint to the sight picture much like the other sights here. It is only really noticable when looking at a white object.
The reticle adjustments go from semi-bright to "dear God, there is a little red sun in my sight!"
The question has been asked, "Will the lowest setting work with night vision?" The ansewer is "Not unless "squinting" is your issued NVD."
Next question "Is it too bright to use in the dark?" My answer is "almost". I could use it without too much trouble, but coming off an Aimpoint I would prefer the the first setting be a little dimmer.
With eleven adjustment settings I really can't see anyone needing to go higher than 8 or maybe 9 even in really bright sun. I left it on 5 all day.
I was able to zero this sight with little trouble. The adjustment dials have very positve clicks you can feel and hear.
I fired around 250 rounds of XM193 and never lost zero. Though I have not started abusing it yet...
All and all it seems like a pretty good sight, but to be honest, I don't think it is a great value.
To me, it does not feel any better built than a Tacpoint and it not even close to an Aimpoint.
I am hoping this sights level of durability chages my opinion.
It is sitting at the bottom of my 200 gallon fishtank and the reticle is still lit....
I will be updating this as I get more abuse on it and compare it to the the performance of the Aimpoint and the Tacpoint.
In the tank
I'll get range pics up soon
