Since so many people want to try out the Larue poor-boy special and Larue is now out, I decided to post on how to do your own. I can not even begin to tell you how great the Larue mount is, it goes without saying. But many aren't sure if a flip mag is for them. The Larue poor-boy allowed you to try it out and see if it works for you. In my opinion it works great but not every one has the same eyes and needs as me.

On to the tutorial.........................

First you need a mount, do yourself a favor and get the Larue LT-649. Its available in bot a tall and a short depending on which optic you will put it behind. When ordering MAKE SURE you tell them it will be for the Hensoldt magnifyer to get the right spacers needed.

Now lets remove the reticle. Remove the rubber eye piece. If you are carefull you may reuse it, on my first one I left it off but it's a personal preference. Make sure you are in a very clean environment to keep the insides clear.

Remove the set screw. And using some large pliers that fit correctly carefully start unscrewing the rear lense housing. Once it starts it will unscrew by hand.

Holding the scope with the opening downward. Bang/tap it down to make the reticle housing and spacer fall out.

Then reassemble the rear lense housing to the main housing. Once you screw it all the way in you might need to focus the scope.Screw it in and out until you get the clearest picture. Once that is done you may replace the set screw. If you wanted to purge it, you should have access to nitrogen or CO2 to clear out the air and replace with inert gas. But it is not manditory, just a nice extra step. Biggest thing is to KEEP IT CLEAN AND DUST FREE!

Enjoy!!!

Nice mug on the left, I have the same one.  How's the optics clarity?  I might have to give one a go for $15.  Aimpoint is awful pricey if I don't like it.

Don't like fog, and I have a CO2 tank - will that work just as well as nitrogen?
8/25/2009 12:44:13 PM EDT

Yep, CO2 will work just fine. Clarity is not an issue, remember to adjust the focus.

Thanks a lot cyclic!

Anyone ever find out what the actual magnification is? I've read from between 1.8X all the way to 3X with no solid answer.

Well, I have wanted to do this ever since I learned they were out at LaRue. It looks a lot simpler that I thought, I got one on order.

Am I just stupid, or did I miss the part where you actually remove the reticule? Is it a separate piece or do you have to polish it off of the glass?
8/25/2009 4:21:49 PM EDT
[#9]
Its easy to miss, if you look closely the small piece in the middle here.............

It is the reticle and a small spacer, you simply leave it out and reassemble the optic without it.

Left to right you have: optic body, reticle assembly, spacer, rear optic assembly.
8/25/2009 4:24:56 PM EDT
[#10]
Just using my mark 1 eyeball, it's between 1.75x and 2x with the reticle removed. I actually held it up to my eye and compaired the two images in kind of an overlay fashion. If you want to be positive try using it on a one inch grid and tell us the results.

How would you go about purging it with CO2 or Nitrogen?
8/26/2009 12:56:59 AM EDT
[#14]
To purge, with CO2 at least, you can try using dry ice. I have no idea if the Hensoldts are air tight, but if they are, carefully and slowly reassembling them inside of a cooler with crushed dry ice at the bottom which has been allowed to sublimate should give you at the very least a more carbon dioxide rich atmosphere. Since I'm no scientist I can't speak to any moisture issues this method might create so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in or offer a better solution.

Reticle and spacer, the spacer holds nothing once the reticle is removed. It possibly could move around under use and cause crap to get on a lense inside if left inside the optic.

Taggage for reference...

Just ordered a couple of the scopes from CTD.  Pained me to do so.
I'll give up on my early June 09 order of the Po'Boy.

Instead, I'll just go ahead and order the mount and make my own dang really po'boy.  Until I break down and buy the actual Aimpoint mag.

What kind of scope rings are you guys using with this setup? 1 inch correct? But what height?

What I found that worked well was to remove just the reticle from the lens assembly, leave the spacer ring out, and put two thin O rings around the reticle lens assembly and reinstall it in the body where it belongs, screw the occular lens back in until it is focused and you are good to go.  I found that if you left the inner reticle lens assembly out that your eye relief increased but your magnification fell off a noticeable amount.  If I took the reticle out of the lens assembly and reinstalled the lens assembly then I could not screw the rear lens in enough to get it to focus.  If I did the same thing only I left the spacer out then it would screw in far enough that I could get it to focus but the inner lens assembly would rattle.  Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I left the spacer out, put two thin O rings around the body of the inner lens assembly, removed the reticle from the same inner lens assembly and screwed it all back together, works great.  It took me about an hour or so of dicking around with it to get what I wanted and then I did my buddy's in maybe 5 minutes tops.

I found the same thing but my solution was to disassemble the housing that held the range finding reticle, remove it and re-assemble it. Then you can use the spacer and re-assemble the magnifier with all parts. Maybe because there are two lenses in this part, the one with the etched range finder and another. Not sure. You can take a piece of sheet metal and make a tool to unscrew the cap on the part.

I found that when I reassembled it minus just the range finding reticle and used all other parts that I could not get the occular lens to screw in far enough to focus properly, that is why I left the spacer out which allowed it to focus but also allowed it to rattle.  No spacer and added the O rings allowed me to have my cake and eat it too; visual clarity, no loss of magnification, no tank killing reticle, and no rattle.  For less than $20.00 shipped to your door you just cannot go wrong with these things, sure glad I ordered 2 of them.

Cool, write-up.

I removed the single reticle lense from the reticle "assembly", reinstalled with ring spacer. But could not get it focused enough

As posted above, I tried the rubber O-ring, I only used one rubber O-ring, because two did not allowing eye piece to screw in far enough for proper focus.

One O-ring fit snug around the riticle assembly, and was thick enough to fit snug to the scope tube. the reticle assembly will not move/rattle now

My Hensoldt is now very clearly focused without the reticle lens, and without any loss of magnification!

Awesome, Awesome post. Spent way to much time looking for and trying to convince myself to buy an Eotech or Aimpoint magnifier without looking thru one.  If i like this when it shows up might just have to break down and buy an expensive one.

I just got one of these from CTD. Mine has a rail on the side for an illuminator, so it may be slightly different.

I took it apart and removed the retical. I noticed that the retical was on a flat piece of glass. This made me believe that if I removed it and put it back together that I should have the full magnification without any O rings. However, when I put it back together, with the spacer. It wouldn't focus. I then noticed a slot on the side of the retical lens assembly. That slot must key itself on a silver pin that is right underneath the set screw. Once I correctly keyed the retical lens assembly (minus the retical) I put it back together and got full magnification, no rattling, and perfect focus.

So key that retical lens assembly!

Went to CTD this morning and picked up one of the Hensoldt magnifiers and just took the reticule out of it and damned if this is a great little mag!

I just got a PRC 3X mag for my Eotec 517 but I think I'll find a mount for this little jewel and see how I like it.

+1  That's probably why you couldn't get it to focus, because that middle piece wasn't full seated in its factory position.   IHMO its also a stronger setup to use the spacer when using the middle piece.

Yes.  If you make sure the assembly lines up with the notch it will go back in without rubber O-rings and you can use the original spacer.  Getting it to line up with that notch took at least 30 minutes.  Its a tight fit and must be lined up properly.  And if dropped in sideways you can get oil on the lense.   Then have to clean off the lens, blow out dirt and try again.  I decided to tape a paper clip running from inside the scope from that key extrustion up to the top.  Then dropped the assembly down the shaft with the paperclip in the notch.  It happens to be of perfect size.

Bingo..

There should be a slot cut out on the side of the assembly holding the reticle glass.

Just stick a small flathead screwdriver in there and pop out the ranging glass, I believe it's held in by a little adhesive.

Also, I want to clarify that there are 2 different magnifier models.

The one Larue used in the Po Boy is the 2X version.

The ones that CTD carried is the 2.6X version... with the illuminator rail.

I have both models and find the 2.6X variant much more useful. If the lluminator rail bother you, just mount it upside down.

I tested my 2.6X magnifier out today (in conjuction with Aimpoint CompM4) and it was easily good out to 200 yards.

I have a foggy 2.0x17angle magnifier and decided to use it as a trial run for removing the reticle and maybe cleaning the fog off of it once i had it open...unfortunately, its the back parts that come out when removing the reticle that lacks the fog.  anyone know how to remove the front half of this assembly?

I'm assuming you have to rotate one of the rings accessible from straight on in the front- but none seem to want to turn and I don't want to start forcing them unless I know which one it is.

I bought several and one was foggy as well, so I chose to disassemble it completely just as a learning tool. The front optics unscrew just like the rear optics, but with no set-screw. However, the optics inside, two lenses and a prism, are held in by a very thin screw-in locking ring that will require a special tool to remove it. All optics seem to use the same sort of thin screw-in rings, and I've long wondered if someone makes a specialized tool for removing them or if it's just some sort of custom tools each optics manufacturer makes for their own purposes, so I did a quick search online, and the item is a "lens spanner wrench", they can be had on Amazon.com and other places.
