I have a Pelican 1750 with no foam, just got it used, and I order new foam for it. I would like to see some pics on how everyone sets them up, not that it is rocket science, but ideas such as how to cut slots for mags would be great. EDIT: This thing is still going on for over 15 years and still not tacked. |

Patience. You need to make sure you lay everything out first. Trace all items with chalk or as in my case, a black sharpie marker. When tracing, angle the pen in towards the object so that you are making an outline a bit smaller than the intended object; this will ensure a snug fit. There has been plenty of discussion regarding the best method of cutting the foam. It has been suggested to use an electric turkey carving knife, which does work well most of the time, however, mine died about 5 seconds in and I had to resort to a box cutter. The worst thing you can do when cutting foam is to use a sawing motion. This will leave extremely ugly, jagged edges. Make straight clean cuts using a long sharp razor such as the inserts found in box cutters. Make sure to take your time. This can not be stressed enough. The slower you go, the better the end result. If you decide cutting the foam yourself is not for you, or you simply want a professional job, there are services out there that will cut to your specifications. Here's my 1750.. I used an electric carving knife - piece of cake! Freezing the foam does help, especially if you're cutting it with a razor. Definately take your time - the end result is worth it!

How do you do it with a bandsaw? I assume you have to make an insertion cut from the outside and then connecting cuts from one hole to the other? |

*real* cushions are typically built up with layers and pieces. These are glued together. You can buy 3M #77 spray adhesive at home depot, which is equivalent to the glue that foam shops use. I just design cushions, I don't figure out how to build them, so I can't really say what all you can do with a band saw. Also, for round holes - you can make a pipe cutter - just sharpen the end of a pipe |

A pelican 1200 hold ten 30 rounders or eight 30 rounders and four 20 rounders perfectly! Just throw a silica pack in there and it's already air and water tight. Older pic (sorry) but you get the idea.

Question for all you Pelican owners out there; is cutting the foam really necessary? I flew out to KS last month for some pheasant hunting, took my O/U and a Rem 870 in my new 1720; didn't cut the foam at all. Seemed to work just fine. So what's the problem with just leaving the foam as-is? Not cool enough? Potential case/rifle damage? Inquiring minds want to know... |
If I was King of the World, things would be different.
I think cutting the foam is critical as the guns can, if the case drop hard enough, slide between the uncut layers of the foam possible banging into each other if there are multiple items in the case. Not to mention it kicks ass on the cool factor. Pardon my lack of research but I too am looking for a Pelican case. Do they sell foam to go with the case or is this aftermarket foam? Also what size would work for a 16" carbine? It looks as though a 1750 would suffice nicely for a 20" AR? Daryn |
If you store your carbine with the stock closed then a 1700 will work. I keep my stock in the middle range so I ordered a 1720 to make room. |
1700, 1720, or a 1750 would work for a 16" carbine. I have a 1720 for my 16" carbine, that I ordered from kblagg @ Ballistic Sounds. Most Pelican cases come with foam, though you can purchase without. You can also purchase the foam by itself. My case is cut for my carbine and a bunch of mags. No pictures, cause my camera is very shitty, and you wouldn't be able to pick the black rifle out from the dark grey background. The case is cut for 6 20 round mags and 4 30 round mags. I'm going to get new foam here in not too long and cut it for my carbine and my 1911, and store the mags seperate. The new foam will come after the new buttstock for the rifle. |

Does Pelican make a gun case with egg crate foam on both sides? Quite frankly, I think cutting foam to fit one gun is stupid if you have multiple firearms and want to use the same case. Can anybody help me out? |

This is my 1720 case. This is my personal patrol rifle that I keep in the trunk of my patrol car. I'll be adding an EOtech at a later time. I had to set up this case to allow for a quick grab and go of the rifle. Single point sling rolled up. Also, if you are wondering, the yellow thing in the case is a safety block that you insert into the mag well and stick ups thru the ejection port. We use these when we train at the range so I keep it handy. It is a great way of making sure that the rifle is absolutely safe.
