Go to page 9 to see 8.2" data.

Various owners are working out numbers for the 10.5" barrels.

Commercial loads are harder to compare at this time. The lighter projos are not best suited to the shorter rigs. Velocities aside, power figures are in the 1200-1250ft/lb range is what I have gotten out of my 10.5" with the JBFA loads.

I have been tryng duck away to do analysis of 277 w compared to 300 BO and x40 out of short barrels but I haven't had a chance.  Now I am going to bed .  Its hard to compare apples to apples since there is zero x40 data for 8" barrels.  This famour charg shows 300 BO 110g load from 8" barrel at 1027 ft/lbs / just over 2k fps.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v726/abinok/412260_343799122333216_617473682_o.jpg

so is there any factory .277 wolverine ammo available that is mroe powerful than this?

The .277 would probably have better SDs and BCs & trajectory and would would make less back pressure w/ my 30 cal can to make it easier to not use a selectable gas block...

If you are looking at supersonic then the WLV should make more power in its respective caliber masses. The cases just hold more powder. There is more shoulder but it's not much. I personally am trying to see where, with certain masses, 1300ft/lbs out of a 10.5" is attainable in safe loadings from this cat.

Mid-south munitions just posted that they now have WLV ammo for sale. 90-130grn offerings. Exciting for sure.

What is the application? Hunting, CQB, etc?

okay, per jbm ballistics Litz data w/ that average velocity you have
1196 ft/lbs of muzzel energy and 773 ft/lbs at 200 yards w/ 3.5" drop w/ a 100 yard zero

300 Blackout per that chart & JBM but w/ a 110 g 30 cal vmax would be:
1027 ft/lbs of muzzel energy and 583 ft/lbs at 200 yards w/ 4.5" drop w/ 100 yard zero

Thanks for running it.  Although not by leaps and bounds, the WLV comes out on top. Especially with energy on target.

yes, more muzzel energy, better extenals and mure energy down range, plus the ammo would be lighter.

The only thing is I have a 30 cal suppressor, not a 27 cal...  Guess its just a matter of whether I want better suppression and more common ammo or better ballistics...  Course having the ovebore suppressor may bebetter for the shooter in giving less backpressure in his ear, and less gas in the mouth.

On the WLV forum they said the ammo is hitting the presses today. Once they have stock it should be on their website.

to compare it to 7.62x40:

per wilson's combat, their factory 110 load does 2534fps/ 1569 ft/lbs at the muzzle out of a 16" barrel.  This is, BTW, the same figures for their published max load w/ Acc 1680 powder which is the fastest of the powders they have listed for that barrel/bullet.

per top of page 6 page 27 cal 110 vmax was running 2500-2550 fps from a 16" ARP barrel w/ a variety of powders.  Of course these are handloads from back then...

Now I suspect that x40 would gain advantage from shorter barrels w/a given barrel length, it would have to per physics w/ the greater capacity and bearing surface, but still the 27 cal has bullets w/ higher BC & SD...  Very clevery OP, though it might have been bette had you used longer case w/ magazines made for feeding 300 BO subs & x40, but since the ban years, a lot of people get hung up about magazines and alot of people still live in ban states, but everything is a compromise and OP probably chose the wiser course.

Has anyone tried lil gun or faster burning powders in the shorter barrels??

How much is formed brass for this?? i went to "brassgeneral.com" and it was some sort of werif count down odomoeter site that prompts you to click something.  Is that the site of the guy that makes the brass??? I hope I didn't accept a virus.

one more question OP.  Sorry I'm late to the party here but I would like to know:
how does this chambering work form 8ish" barrels going between suppressed and unsuppressed??

It would be nice if it did not necessarily need a selectable gas block to run...

Thx

The 10.5" we have go from unsuppressed to suppressed without having to change anything. The 8.2" haven't been messed with yet. I have more 8.2" coming in shortly to play with.

Tested the JBFA 90 TNT Ammo Today...

16" ARP barrel. Going to pull the H2 buffer I'm running and replace with standard carbine. I had the H2 in there from testing my hot, heavy bullet handloads so it threw ejection off a little to the appearing undergassed side. Bolt locked back every time on Pmag, Lancer, GI aluminum mag so it is not truly undergassed I just need to put the regular buffer back in. Ejection with the H2 was 4:30. Putting the standard back in should bring it back to 4:00.

I'm sorry I don't have pics to post, but I will tell you that because this is the rifle I'm bringing to the demo next Saturday, I ran my Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9 on a QD LaRue mount, pulled that, ran the Eotech EXPS next, and even sighted in the RMR that's mounted on a 45 degree as backup, and, BUGHOLES at 50 yards all day.

Nice work Bruce!

Brass looks great, standard "factory" ammo results with pressure signs. Doesn't look any different than most 6.8 or 5.56 ammo from the box.

how did that compare w/ handloads from 16" barrels w/ that bullet??

as to subsonics:
meh, no interest.  if a guy wants subsoncry he can get 300 BO I guess, but that whole thing pises me off: still no heavy factory subsonic ammo that edxpands.  Also, out to like 200 yards, the diff b/t 45+p and 300 BO Subs is so close to be insiginificant but the 45 does factory ammo that can expand & penetrate both.  I've run the numbers, its like 3-4" extra drop w/ a 100 yard zero for like 8" barreled guns in eitehr chambering.

meh, no interest.  if a guy wants subsoncry he can get 300 BO I guess, but that whole thing pises me off: still no heavy factory subsonic ammo that edxpands.

They aren't cheap but they do a hell of a job at subsonic expansion for the 300 BLK Lehigh Defense. Now if the .45 could only switch magazines and shoot a 125gr bullet at 2,300fps then it might be a close call but not really.

Some of us have hit 2825 or more with a 90TNT out of a 16", under ideal conditions with handloads.

Just as a comparison for 300 blackout, I get 2000 fps out of a 10.5" with 125 grain bullets. These are pink tip overruns from the first batch (ie remington premier accutips). That's about 1120 ft lbs.

yes, you can't compare 300 BO to 45 ACP since BO can be a supersonic intermidieate rifle chambering w/ just a magazine switch.  I just find it irritating that for so many years BO has been out and its abilty to switch to subsonic is constantly brought up, but there is STILL NO factory ammo w/ expanding bullets and apparantly the expanding bullets for 100 fps are really expensive.  This means that the benefti of subsonicry is nill unless you are a hand loader.

I'd rather have both a 277 w or 6.8 or whatever AND also a 45 than ONLY have a 300 BO w/ super and non expanding sub sonic ammo.

that no on ehas loaded up expanding BO subs for sale indicates to me that its subsonice capability is really not that inportant to most BO shooters.  Turns out, most BO shooters just want a better performing supersonic chambering for shorter barreled ARs w/o all the fuss of propretary parts and larger bolts that eat into the safety margins of the envelope.

even w/ just 90 grain ammo at 2300 fps (conservative)  from an 8.2" the .277 is getting about +1050 ft/lbs

if you move up to to the 110 g bullet, you get 1196 fps at the average handloaded velocity w/ a bullet that weigs 15 grain less than the pink tip 300 bo from the 10.5"

OP, please update this thred w/ links when that second ammo comapny has ammo listed for sale.

STILL YES FACTORY SUBSONIC AMMO. Kinda posted a link to the factory subsonic expanding ammo.

The fact that I have taken many pigs with non expanding subsonic ammo makes it a little more of a benefit than "nil". I don't have to wear hearing protection and if the pigs are far enough away it confuses them sometimes when they don't hear a shot and one of them falls. Now if you want to use subsonics for home protection then spend the extra money and buy the ones I linked to.

We're way off topic here, but think FatMcNasty here is getting some subsonic .300" pills to expand reliably.

It sure would be great to see reloading data in the next Hornady book

to find loaded ammo in (at least) gun stores if not WallyWorld.

Congrats gents.  It's really rewarding to see this happen for you.  This happened pretty fast, if you stop and think about it.

Velocities appear to be biting the heels of the SPC SAAMI, maybe even matching it with some of the loads, which is impressive.

This is turning out to be an awesome little 223 variant.

Are there ballistic charts showing popular bullets & velocities for varying barrel lengths?

(I've jumped around in this thread and dont know what all has been posted so far)

Thanks.  The Wolverine actually has its own forum now... we have about 125 barrels out there, more coming from 8.2", 10.5", 12.5", 16" and 18".

Not to speak for MDWS but it is coming together. The cartridge is rather efficient & does well in just about every barrel variant.

Commercial loads I tried were stated as 2700fps out of a 16". In my 10.5" I saw upper 2400's to mid 2500's depending on the day. Same chrony that was used to verify the loads in development.

Mark, has anyone tried/loaded the Wolverine round long ( say 2.300" COL) or is the throat not cut long enough ? It would
be very Interesting to see what it can do if it was loaded long and/or had a long throat combined with a longer length Bbl.
like a 18" or 20" .

Thanks.

I have the 18" but the throat isn't long enough to load long with most bullets. he said it was done that way so it would function 100% in standard mags i think another 50 or so fps could proabably be gained loading out but then pri mags would have to be used and then binding during stacking would occur.

Vic,  freebore is .100, and in the bolt gun we can probably load it a little longer but still not by much. Most bullets will hit the lands before we get to 2.30.

BD is right that we did limit length to ensure function, since the bullet ogive is what generally runs on the front mag rib to avoid binding.

The first batch of 18" barrels we had appear to have a .080 freebore or thereabouts, as we think the reamer started to wear when they were run. We've since remedied by going CNC/carbide rougher and finisher  sets only vs. manual lathe and HSS for different batches.

threaded barrels can still have an 11 degree crown in there.  You can also get 5/8" threading if you want the muzzle to be thicker and less prone to change when hot.
