| Didn't know myself what this was, had to ask over at another board (IAA). They think its the XM178 Cartridge 7.62 , ball, over head fire application, turned gliding metal bullet. Will have to get back with the sizes and weights. Not common but not rare either. There is also a tracer aswell (XM179) Thanks for looking wolfgang |

Tighter accuracy standards than normal Ball ammo, because its intended use was, well, Overhead Fire. As in, firing over friendlies' heads in training. Don't want much dispersion––or wild flyers!––when you're just shooting over barbed wire while guys crawl under it. Same ballistics though, so the sights would still be on. Or in other live-fire practice exercises... I'm vaguely surprised the .mil doesn't have an OF spec for ball anymore. |
