What you people don't think he's not good enough? |
OMFG !!!! ![]() ![]() I am literally crying with laughter !!!
|
|
Here is a short list of things to get or at least think about: Two is one and one is none! Three lights (one on each weapon and a handheld). Two phones (one needs to be a cell). Alarm system with a motion dector. Dog (doesn't need to be a pit bull). AR15 (high round count, precision and fragmentation). Handgun (secondary tool). OC grenade (roll it down the stairs and close the door. If they don't leave after that you know your dealing with a dedicated individual). Honestly, pick the weapon your most comfortable with using. That weapon SHOULD be the one that gets the most range time as well. If your NOT comfortable using an AR for HD, then I would suggest getting training until you are! C4 |
I don't know whether to treat this as a serious question or not. My Aimpoint hardly makes any noise at all if I turn the switch slowly. I"ll just say that if he's close enough to hear the clicks as I turn it on, it will be the last thing he ever hears. I would point shoot with just the light if it came down to that. Of course if I really twisted the switch fast, the distinctive sound it makes might make him shit himself or something!

Can these be had by civilians? |
Actually I don't think clasky is that far off.
A shotgun is best hands down. + That's a valid opinion. - It's just an opinion. You can't beat it for close quarters contact which is why many MIL/LEO special ops teams use them as entry guns. - IIRC They use it to open doors not to shoot poeple. I don't care if you are a Navy SEAL Delta Jedi, when woken up at 3 AM, you are not on your A-game and your senses take a bit of time to adjust. + Very true. A good scattergun lets you point at center mass and shoot. + A load of buckshot has more engery and more mass than a 5.56/223 or 9mm/40/45. So a center mass shot from a buckshot should be more effective. Use some Federal 00 Tactical and you are good to go. + I'll take your word that it's a good round. In fact, many LEO will tell you that the sound of a pump gun being racked is generally enough to scare off most would-be invaders. + It has a good chance of scaring off the someone looking grab a DVD or who mistakes your house for their girlfriends. - This is not something you can rely on. Plus if someone is out to get you (like a crazy ex-girlfriend or boyfriend) you might just be telling them where you are. Also, any home defense gun should have a white light. This is a must! No questions about it. You cannot take the chance that the bump in the night is really . . . + very true So by my score card you get 6 +'s and only 3 -'s. That plus $200, a form 4 and a CLEO signature will get you an SBR.

The best security if a poster of Chuck Norris crouched and ready to strike on every door of the house.. No criminal would dare enter... Option 2, woudl be Claymores.
PFFT What good is that thing gonna do?
|
| I have a glock 19 at hand with a light atatched to the rail and another surefire near also. I will hand that to my wife as I get the shotgun out of it's spot. We will call 911 tell them our location in the house and that we are armed. We will then sit tight and hold the room.I am not wandering through my home to clear it unless I have to. Our home ownersinsurance will cover anything stolen and the safe protects the really valuable stuff. |
Some of the wisest words in this thread so far. |
+1 A lot of people mistakenly think that "house clearing" is a one-man job. |
And you think convincing a jury that you're not evil for owning an evil black rifle is tough? Try explaining how you beat an intruder to death with a high-powered jumbo.... No really, it's not mine... it belongs to my wife... or something.... |
|
Serious question: For those who claim their AR is their home defense weapon, how do you keep it accessible? Is it loaded and unlocked under your bed? I, for one, have a young child and would like to keep all my firearms locked at all times, at least until this child learns total respect for firearms. So my solution is a Sig P220 in a small, locked handgun safe that I can easily open in about a second. I can't think of any other way to keep my AR (or shotgun) locked, yet rapidly available. Of course if I had some warning, or time, I would have a long gun at my side. |
|
A 12 pound Civil War cannon. A frozen cornish hen will put a big hole in somebody and will not over penetrate. If you are hungry after shooting said bad guy, go down range, the bird is cooked(if you can find any pieces left. If that does not work, a poster of Shelly Winters does. |
|
Read through the thread and would like to offer some observations: 1) A good alarm system, just remember to set it before going to bed. If nothing else it'll get you pumped up going off at 3am! 2) Have a plan and practice it. Hold the room and call the cops with the land line (caller ID) or if you have enhanced 911 use a cell. Cell is a must for a back up if the power is out (cordless phone won't work under these conditions, but a corded phone will). Let insurance pay, not worth your life or court/jail time if you do shoot someone. 3) First hand experience; I stopped someone trying to break in the front door at 2am by racking an 870's action. Once my knees quit shaking, I looked out the front door and saw a set of wet footprints up the steps and back down the steps. Yes, it did reveal my location, but it also revealed my intent. 4) All weapons from bullwhips to .50 BMG have pros and cons to them. Use what works. What you know and practice with and what you can operate under stress. Extreme stress. 5) HK Super 90 will hold one in the chamber, however many in the magazine, and what a lot of folks don't know is one on the feed ramp. I know from experience. Learned it by accident during a reload during a match. Don't know if any other shotgun will do the same. 6) After action. If you do shoot the intruder, best to be sure he's not going to sue you for injury and not being able to practice his profession, make sure he doesn't get up again, ever. But don't put an entire magazine into his corpse either. Also, how will you be judged by a jury, grand or trial. Black rifle=the devil himself or black rifle=just another tool? If the first, use something else. Too hard to explain to the DA that your white light, EOTECH, and laser are just accessories and that you had no choice but to use THIS particular weapon in your situation. If the latter, you still live in a free state. No matter where you live, there will be grief coming your way. If you don't have to shoot, don't. If your life is in danger, shoot, don't hesitate, don't doubt, don't second guess. My option, 16" AR and shot placement from behind hard cover. |
I am an old fart with no youngans around the house to worry about, so mine aren't locked up. Most of my guns stay in a full size safe, but my HD weapons are at the ready at all times. I don't own one of these Wall Safe, but something like this might work for you. |
|
I have a blind dog that is an evil little bitch, but she only barks if someone knocks or rings the door bell. So there goes my alarm system. I have an 870, but I'll be damned iff I can find the shells for the thing as my closet is too full of crap. I have an AR but it is in a safe, and the rounds for it are in another safe in thier boxes inside an ammo can. So unles I can brew up a really loud fart, I am just plain out of luck I guess. But I suppose I could shine my super things that go bump in the night investigating flashlight at them and hope they run away. Just kidding really but until you have been there you do not know how you will react. It is very paralizing to KNOW that someone is in your home. What ever you choose to defend yourself with make sure you use it ALOT and are comfotable with it even in the dark, as most intruders do not have a nice red bullseye or stand still until you figure out where the safety/coking mechanism is on your firearm. Just my $.02 |
Got mine for $175 at the Tulsa show a few years back. |

exactly. what you can get your hands on. i remember when i was little, my mom heard somebody coming in the front door. she hit him with the ash raker for the wood stove, and he took off. nobody keeps a baseball bat or 9 iron around anymore. its much more gratifying to beat someone with something than it is to shoot them. personally i keep a tomahawk and d cell maglite next to the bed. |
This argument, among others, was made by a serious poster in the now-defunct "perfect tactical carbine" thread started by ikold to support the proposition that iron sights ought be used exclusively for home defense carbines. He subsequently deleted his posts and moved them, sans criticism, to another forum. |
Mazeman, I just leave my rifle laying in the corner next to the bed. I don't have kids to worry about. The rest of my guns stay locked up in the safe, but the HD carbine and my CCW are out all the time. Your solution sounds like it works for you, which is the most important thing. |
Roger that. Most people only think of firearms as 'weapons for defense'. As a martial arts guy or a D Boy, "What is a weapon?" The likely answer is "Everything in the room". I am in my home office right now. There are two ARs in here as well a 3 various configuration 870s, a Smith Airweight hammerless, a Seecamp 32 and a Winchester Mod 97 with an 18" bbl. All are loaded. But if I am in the kitchen that Pepper Mill or 12" Heinckel Chefs knife or the Blender will do just fine until I can get to something more lethal or make my get away. Denny |
This would work! I was chased out of a basement in Chicago by a 3 foot tall black Rooster.Never went down there again. |
Sure can and I will be selling them in the near future. C4 |

I know a lot of guys hate these threads. I love 'em. There are so many funny comments. Some of them are intentionally witty, and some of them are meant to be serious but crack me up anyway. OK, I'll play. I have various weapons around in various places. The easiest one to get to is a large-caliber revolver. The second easiest is a lever-action carbine in the same caliber. (Boy if you think racking a shotgun scares the bejeebers out of a BG, you should see 'em run when you chamber a round in your John Wayne gun! YMMV |
|
I keep a cardboard life-size cutout of Chuck Norris just inside my door at night. Anyone who breaks in will flee for fear of being killed with a whithering volley of round-house kicks to the head. I have to keep a night light on in that room though . . . Chuck Norris isn't afraid of the dark - the dark is afraid of Chuck Norris. Remember - there are 1,246 items in the average room that Chuck Norris can use to kill you - including the room itself! |
|
my first choice is a USP Compact .40. i've praticed a lot more with it than rifles and am more proficient with it. my second choice if i had time to get into the safe is a Ket-Tec Sub 2000. my reasons for not using the AR inside are unusual but its because i'm a pilot, working towards becoming a commercial airline pilot and i have to pass a 1st class medical to get there which includes a hearing test. a few rounds from short barrelled AR indoors could end my flying career.
