This is what I was thinking. https://www.ar15.com/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif I have a spare Portuguese muzzle device...and one of the raw (repro) FSB castings for a proto AR15...wonder if that would fit the lightweight version... I'll have to consider how it would look cut to 16" with a 607-style stock. Just for range fun! You would have to turn it down because the 5.56 Proto FSB is .750" at the largest part of the base. I predict that this will be quickly rectified before these come to market- understand that Brownell's did nothing here... or on the other retro rifles. It's an NDS upper and lower with a BA (5.56) or a Faxon (7.62) barrel. If someone says, "Hey, want to buy my correct FSB?" the answer will be YES. Same with color correcting the furniture- either their current vendor will improve their offering, or someone else will. Quoted:

That is absolutely awesome! I do really hope they make the narrow AR10 style front sight base and ditch the AR15/M16 style that is shown in their pictures. That would make it a slam dunk. I think you mean that they would have to be turned down to. 625, which is both what the originals are, and what the prototype front sight is Quoted:

Someone will make a proper .750" FSB for these guns pretty quick I figure. |

.625" - .308" = .317"
.317" divided by 2 = .158" wall thickness per side. I know it can be done, and I know JT can do it. However, you will have to move centerline of the pin outward to increase remaining wall thickness so as to mitigate the potential for bore deformation. You will also have to be super careful if you ever remove and re-install the pins. A pin gauge should be used in the barrel after installation to determine of the bore was swaged. |

Quoted: Someone here did a build like that, but as an AR-15 using the Nodak upper with the trigger-style charging handle and slabside lower. He also made some custom handguards that looked like a shortened version of the Portuguese ones (as opposed to just using the plastic part of the Port. handguards). Used the 1st Gen. collapsible stock. Looked pretty sweet. ETA: postino was the guy who did it: http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FrogBait4/2NDSprotos3.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b390/FrogBait4/Brown_4a.jpg The AI AR-10 carbines themselves looked pretty cool. The carbine muzzle device is shorter than the Portuguese one or the similar version with the bayonet lug on the bottom. The reduced-diametre areas between the flash suppressor and the first grenade ring, between the first and second grenade rings, and between the second grenade ring and the full-diametre area to which the bayonet lug is attached are all a tad shorter, and the tapered area at the front end of the ring where the bayonet lug is located is virtually eliminate. The muzzle ring on the bayonets had to be set back accordingly. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8b/01/f5/8b01f5875a9c3c10cd83b69f89c26ab6.jpg |

I think that the metal from the hand guards could be modified to work with the hand guards from NODAK. ( I have several of each in boxes) I also have some Russian SMG parts kits with Hand guards that may work if modified. I also built many AK's over the years and the FSB used on a couple of them they are very similar, with a little work they too might be used for early FSB. Left over parts from kits. I will need to do some digging in storage. Please keep this thread going, there are some fantastic ideas and pictures.......... Thanks Ron |

There was a discussion of what it would take to mass produce that style of handguard a while back and it sounded very expensive. On the other hand, I'm almost certain that someone here reproduced the Portuguese style handguards for themselves including the heat shields (someone did the bipods, too, IIRC). I think postino made the handguards for the carbines in the pics above.
ETA: Found the thread on the repro bipod and handguards (plastic parts only): https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Portuguese-AR10-bipod-faithfully-reproduced-update-HG-3d-printing-done-/123-717386/&page=1&anc=bottom#bottom |

That is not is genuine carbine upper, even Stef will agree. Rather it is a shortened Portuguese.
Genuine carbines were Transitional and had the earlier simpler charging handle, and earlier style FSB. The carbine barrels were just a tad (1/4") over 16" when adding the muzzle device. Pin or weld it and no NFA. |

I don't know if you can just swap a proto Armalite FSB for the Brownell's one, the Brownell's one is longer so there may be a taper pin groove left exposed by the proto Armalite FSB.
And doesn't that effect the length of barrel ahead of FSB, too and proper bayonet fit? Seems the correct AR10B rifle handguard should be longer by about 1/4" to 5/16" to keep the exposed barrel the proper length for the bayonet catch and muzzle device ring. |

Quoted: I am going to mine up as a prototype Armalite, so the perforated sleeve of the muzzle device will cover up any taper pin damage. IMO, the Brownell's upper looks more like an Armalite than a Portugese, AND I just love the Pegasus logo. Quoted: The upper doesn't really look like an Armalite. It looks more like the Sudanese style upper. Lower doesn't quite look like the AI or Armalites, just similar, but close enough to either that at a glance you probably wouldn't notice. Does anybody have any connections with Savage arms company? The front sight from their MSR 15 Patrol rifle looks like it would be PERFECT for Brownell's AR10's. I just spent over an hour on the phone with them, but they will not sell the sight by itself. Maybe @Brownells would have some luck with Savage so they could put a better looking/more accurate front sight on their AR10 rifles. Otherwise, does anyone on here have a connection with Savage so we could purchase some?
