Someone ask magpull to make a new gen of pmag for this

I've been watching this from the sidelines for several days now and I thought I'd chime in with some relevant info before this got too nasty. If you go and find the various videos that Brownell's has put out, they discuss why Pmags do not fit. Between the bevel on the sides for the modern angled magwells and the built up section of the front of the mag to help accommodate the internal curve, they could not make it fit inside of the profile they established to match the old lowers. I suspect they would have had to make the front of the well too thin. One way around this would be to mimic the massively angled magwell cut of the prototype sporter model, but it's hardly the 'iconic' model of AR-10 that they are going for. Also, if you keep up with some of the updates they've put out, the bolt carrier is getting the three vent holes that are so prominent on the originals.

Thank you for the info!!!!  The CURVE is the problem.  Now THAT is a very sensible reasoning.  From right here, I would NOT change a thing and just leave the gun as is, personally....and further gnash my teeth at Magpul for not making straight 20 rounders.  ( Still angry that they don't make the straight 20 round 5.56 rounds )

Thank you, CaptKirk, for the info!!!

What are the reported issues with the 20 round brownells .308  mags?  I've heard they have relaibiliy issues.  Hopefully they can get those straightened out.  I'd love to see them make an AR10 waffle version of them.

mine work fine.

most AR10 reliability trouble seems to be from kit builds, using different parts brands.

All it took was a 20-something historically minded college kid to point out something. I'm mainly guessing that that was the problem, but it makes sense considering that one of the things that makes Pmags reliable is the internally curved geometry. The added boss at the front of the mag just below the 'magwell portion' of the mag must be there for a reason and I'd bet it is to provide room for the internal curve. It may still be possible to modify the mags to fit, but I'd question their structural integrity after removing the extra material. I tend to follow the 'retro mags for retro guns' line of thinking anyway.

Yeah, modding the the P-Mag would definitely not work too well as the .308 P Mag is just on the edge, materially speaking....and, as far as I know, you are correct, the curved geometry is beneficial.

All this pmag stuff is a bit ridiculous to me. Pmags can be easily modified to function in original AR10’s with minimal dremel work. I’ve been using one for several years I modified with zero issues. See the pics below. They aren’t the best quality as I just snapped them in my phone. Attachment Attached File

They dropped the straight 20s b/c the follower has to tilt, which means it's not as reliable as a curved 20.  Plenty of straight 20s @ the gun shows, just have to look for em.

Ok, why not the lame knock off of the Sudanese handguard.. A nice repro with a better heat shield would be a good back up for the poor design of the original which melts under heavy use.  I have spares but one needs to be very careful with original handguards found on most presample early 10's... and the few semi parts guns out there.

I sent Brownells a NOS Sudanese hand guard and barrel nut for evaluation and "they" seemed eager to make their AR10 use a HG of the same design.  So now there is the potential that these same HGs would be available for maintenance of old rifles and even building AR15 prototypes.

Later Sudanese HGs had an internal heat shield.  Your pre-sample guns should have a metal liner built into the inner surface of the HG.

Sudanese handguards would be great, because they can also be used for prototype builds.

The Armalite AR10B "Repro" of the early 2000's had decent Sudy copies with heatsheilds.

I just ordered another AR10 from Brownells tonight with their 10% off plus free shipping code of MBW (that ends at midnight tonight) and it took over an hour to go through - they must be getting slammed with orders.  Anyway, now I have one of each model on back order - yay!  I also noticed that their web site appears to show Sudanese style handguards now, rather than the triangular ones I seem to remember.
