I'll leave this right here. Let's see who can figure it out. http://johncdang.smugmug.com/photos/i-FH7skcm/0/XL/i-FH7skcm-XL.jpg Very nice, I think there may be people who would still prefer the rails at the end, and possibly keymod at the 45 degree positions. I found this rail. I'm not sure what's up with it but I ordered one... everything I've been able to find on a "Geissele keymod MK4 rail" has turned up results with the keymod holes all the way down the full length of the handguard. However, there are apparently some handguards out there that still have the built in rail sections near the end of the handguard but have keymod slots as well. This is the perfect design, in my opinion. I haven't been able to find these in stock anywhere except Rainier Arms. Hell, like I said... I can't even find any info on them. I'll post up some pics once I get mine. Link to Keymod MK4 with rails |

Winter- this is very recent thing but the mk4 is now with fixed rails and keymod (like the one you linked) and the mk5 is full keymod, no rails. They're phasing out the older style non KM mk4s.
(To make things more confusing, full KM rails out now in people's hands say mk4 on them)

But for future reference, the MK4 is the keymod with fixed rails on the front and the MK5 is the full keymod.

I almost wish I would have gotten the black now but I'm probably going to have this build cerakoted anyway. This is the "desert dirt" color that Geissele has started using. It's pretty interesting... it's a mix between FDE and a greyish/tungsten looking color with a little bit of foliage thrown into the mix I think this new anodizing is much better than the older "sand" or "fde" or whatever Geissele was calling it. The old color had a very reddish tint to it, almost like a bright brow mud color (I'm sure it's obvious in some of these pics). I personally didn't like it much at all. It's kind of hard to judge the color by these pictures because of my mediocre camera and bad lighting/flash distortion but overall I'm pretty happy with this rail. MUCH lighter than my older MK1 15 inch that I used to have (obviously) and much lighter than I was expecting. Still one of the sexiest looking rails on the market, in my humble opinion. I'll post some more pics once I get the entire rifle thrown together... I'm just waiting on my Seekins SP-223 lower then I'll be good to go. I know some of these pics aren't of the rail, just decided to post some pics of the parts I'll be using to build the rifle this Geissele hand guard is going on. Anybody know what the weight of the 13" MK1 is? Geissele website lists it as follows, but by all other accounts it is significantly heavier.
http://geissele.com/13-super-modular-rail-mki-black.html Weight:12.32oz. Installed Weight (Including Barrel Nut):14.24oz. I like the MK4 (non-keymod) but don't like the fact that it has only 5 sections of rail on the 6 o'clock position. Also like the MK3, but it is a bit heavier than the MK4. Any advice on which of the 3 is best (MK1 vs. MK3 vs. MK4)? Don't want anything keymod at this point. |

View Quote I have not used the MK1 (No need for all that weight) Used the MK4 but found the lack of options for 6 o clock did not work with me, I liked the feel of the MK3 and MK1 more so than the MK2 and wanted as light as possible so I went with the MK3 13" and have not regretted it at all. Only use 2 rail sections with it. One for grip, one for light. Works great for me. For my next SBR (pistol) build I will likely go with the MK4/MK5 Keymod since that addresses the only issue I had with the MK4's lack of 6 o clock options. |

So the extra 3-4 oz (2 for rail, and 1-2 for sections) is worth it? I'm leaning in the same direction... I don't use a grip but at the same time like the option. Can you even install a AFG on the M4 non-keymod? it seems tight and limited since I may want to move it backwards. Thanks for the response. |

If you read back a page (page 2) you will see where Riddle was able to install sections of rail on a MK4 but only with certain models where the holes were gapped a certain distance, then other models of the MK4 were unable to.

Two quick questions.
1) Is the MK4 (not the Keymod version) actually discontinued as Geissele's website says? 2) Is there enough clearance on a 10.3" barrel and 9.5" MK4 to use an AAC Brakeout and SDN-6? I can't find a good picture with this precise setup. |

I just got a MK4 from Brownells but contacted Geissele before I found mine, here is the reply:
"Thank you for contacting us. We do not have any MK4 13” black non- key mods available. However, we are going to be making our MK4 non-key mod again. As far as timeline availability, we are unsure at this point but it shouldn't be too long before we start rolling these out again." |
