It looks different in that it is a tool room experiment. Notice the other examples are later versions, the gas piston system was part of the design, rather then added to the rifle after the fact. Would have to look it up to be sure, but I bet this rifle was the first example of the AR-16/AR-18 series. |
If the book "The Black Rifle" is to be believed, then only around 17 original Armalite AR-15s were made, and as far as I know, these would have been the only AR-15s produced with the charging handle in that location, so you had your hands on quite a rare specimen. It would be really cool if a commemorative edition of Armalite's original AR-15 were released, with the old charging handle placement, slick side receiver and round handguards and maybe even a straight 25 round magazine to go with it! The weapon in between the AR-17 and AR-16 is not another AR-16, but the AR-12. From Small Arms Review, Vol. 1 no. 4, which also has several picture of it.
