slight segway here: I found and read the article on your upper in combat arms or some such magazine. Charlie Cutshaw didn't do your upper any justice. there was roughly 1 paragraph that actually discussed "shooting impressions" the rest of the 4 page article was selling surefire, cmmg, vltor, or chipmccomick triggers. another hackjob by Cutshaw...this is my surprised face. Basically, I'm interested in what the upper will do too. |
Now, now, we like Charlie, and you most obviously can't accuse me of doing his writing for him. |
I'm sure he's a great guy personally. If I want an actual report I've got to read Sweeny, Fortier, taffin, Ayoob, Kokalis, or smith. I was just a little dissapointed in the article. |

My last test group was 1.146” @100m with PMC 55GR ball. 16" Configured with a Aimpoint ML2 (4MOA) & 2.5X Poor boy magnifier. Uppers are good to go, they will deliver what the ammo, shooter and sighting system is capable of. As with any barrel they will be ammo that a given barrel just doesn’t like, test and find loads that satisfy your needs.

2011BLDR, What part of the dot do you aim with in a situation such as you shot that 1.15" group. ML |
Mark, SOPMOD ACOG Zeroing target has a 7.5“ square outline turned on point with a inner 3.25“ square outline turned on point. This allows me to reference the dot to the outer square edges and adjust scope POI to be center of the inner square. I did a new initial 25M BZO on this upper with a new 2MOA Aimpoint M4, and 3X both in your mounts, last Sunday but the 300M range was full so the 100M BZO will have to wait. I am impressed with the new DNTC comp also, that was the first shooting session with it. Out. 2011BLDR |

My LMT Defender 2000 M4 with 14.5 Barrel can shoot SUB MOA with Black hills blue 77gr/75gr and MK262 |
I like the 18 inch myself The SOPMOD is KILLER To |
Stealth upper is great. Worth every penny. I'd like to give a good range report but the damn front sight of the Troy buis they sent keeps shooting loose!
Talked to Blake in sales, he told me to call Troy. |
Troy might have a different fix, but I put a small amount of Blue Locktite on my threads...worked like a charm. |
Blake should have just told ya --- "Loctite is your friend" |
I must say that I've been so pleased with the quality of construction, craftsmanship, and accuracy of the first SSSS I purchased, that this morning I ordered another.
The private eye in me says, "hoo, hoo, now we know his screen-name". Seriously, appreciate your orders and we know darn well that we're sending out a really nice upper that oughta shoot crows in the side of their heads out a 200 yards. ML |
Mark,
Would it be OK, if I name my first born after your comany. Do I need to pay you some royalties or just buy another SSSS upper. |
When you get the 12" (11" rail) built, pls post a pic or two...If you can ship it with the MB556k, let me know, I'll buy one that day - have my SBR lower ready to roll and FA556k on order. Mike |
OMG...
I don't know how I've missed this part of the forum. But I do know that I want to know if you've got a 16 with the 11.5 in stock.... :D And whatever else I can get under the mistress of finances' radar... |
Tell the mistress that we got plenty of 16" uppers and plenty of 11.0" rails. M. LaRue |
And, it shipped today. I have absolutely no doubt how well it will perform. Thank you once again, and I'm looking forward to adding many more dillo's to the herd. |

Yeppers. ML |
Well... You can go ahead and start packing one of these babies up... As soon as I get this coffee down, and into my office, I'll be making an order. |
Mark,
I went ahead and made my order on Friday, sending one of your uppers to Atlanta. I also dropped you a PM, do me a favor and take a gander at it. I may be able to use some help on fabricating something. |
Thanks for the order, and I'll go take a look at your PM. I will warn you that we no longer take in stuff from the outside ... got too many doo-dads related to AKs or ARs still left to do. The list is long. Plus the big OEM'rs are buying and spec'ing our stuff for their stuff. ML |
roger that! Totally understand! Congrats on being able to say that BTW. |
Mark, Sorry for the delay in response. Using Hornady 75gr NATO TAP, the upper shoots less than 1/2 MOA when I am doing my job. The Geissele trigger doesn't hurt, either. Tim |
Other than 75gr TAP what are some other loads the SSSS likes?
Ive only been shooting 55gr and 62gr American Eagle with good results. |
77grn Black Hills gives me excellent groups. |
LARUE - not only do they make the best beer openers via their dillos but their uppers......are sweet
now.....on to my trust paper work for my SBR on Form 4. a 12" Larue is in the future... |
Whatever I can scrounge. Ammo is getting scarce and expensive these days. Good thing the Quad S has run everything Ive put through it. I haven't used wolf yet. I don't want to feed those ugly green cases to my beautiful upper. |
What rail length would i want to completly cover the gas block?
Im in the process of pricing out an upper I want to build, and after everything I need I end up paying close to the same if I bought one of these uppers. Now Im very tempted to order one...
Any pics of a 16" with 10 and 11" handguards? Will they cover the LP gas block? thanks! |
11" will completely cover the gas block. 10" will cover about half of it. I think the 10" is featured on larue's site.
Accuracy report ----
Guy calls me today to report in on a 16" at about the 12,000 round mark ... says he's still getting a 1/2 moa with Mk262 ... but he's also one of those guys that shoots like a vise. A couple of times he mumbled something about it sometimes being 1/4 moa, but I pretended not to hear him. Just an update. ML ETA - The 1/2 moa was derived from 3" groups at 600. |
One more thing ...
I forgot to add that our 12,000 round guy has had only one malfunction, it was a double-feed that he attributed to a bad mag ... and that was several thousand rounds ago. ML |
The biggest difference isn't price, it's barrel quality. The LaRue has a stainless steel, polygonally-rifled, 1:8 twist with a Wylde chamber. It really depends on what you expect to accomplish with your rifle. Given the two choices you gave at the beginning of the thread... huge disparity in capability. |
Can i see a picture of a 18inch barrel with a 13 1/2 handguard please? thanks
I couldn't have said it better Mike |
Dude, how many times do we have to hear about your LMT's accuracy What the hell does that have to do with this thread? This is a post about LaRue's excellent upper, don't crap in this post. Mine has been flawless, I haven't shot for groups yet but I will soon. |
