Looking for a 1-4x scope for my AR15. I dont want to break the bank.
Saw a M-223 Nikon for $200 used and thougth that would work but not sure of the 20mm lense and a one inch tube. I woud like the exposed target knobs as well as more than just a cross hair redical. Can anyone lend some info on what ones to look at that may fit? |

Not many good ones in that price range, but my PA has held zero with no issue for over a year of hard use. |

I'm with C_1 on the Weaver Classic 1-3x. I have one in a Freedom Reaper mount/Ring combo from DNZ. The Weaver was the first thing I purchased when I started here. I need to buy another to throw in the safe for a future build. I personally use the Primary Arms compact 3x and am extremely happy with it for my A2.
That said, although this isn't a 1-4x, I have no reason to doubt their other products aren't of the same quality. |

1x4 is a "jack of all trades - master of none" scope.
I have both the PA 1-4 and the Leatherwood CMR. Same magnification - two totally different applications. The PA with it's dot and non range-finding reticle is great for close target acquisition and occasional longer shots. It's clarity is good but not great. Perfect price and quality for a beginnner scope. The Leatherwood CMR is much better at distance (500 yards is my limit so far) due to it'sfiner reticle, ranging ability and very clear glass. Just FYI...the CMR has made me begin to rethink my power needs. I get groups almost as good at 500 yards with it as I do with higher magnification (6-18 nikon) scopes that are not quite as clear. I believe the CMR is very much an under appreciated scope for it's price. I am currently looking at all the info I can find for the Vortex 1-4. It might be as good or better than the CMR, but It would have to be great to beat it. Now if Vortex had the CMR's ranging reticle, I would be all over it. |

It's a great little scope, and I too really like that reticle which I use in close range shoots involving movement, although it is fine enough for greater distance work too, although mine is sitting on a rimfire at the moment. I too considered the Vortex PST and recently fondled one when a friend bought it. Very nice glass and build quality, I would have to say better than the CMR imho. Turrets feel more positive and overall build feels better, but then it costs more and I'm not keen on the reticle having seen it now. I recently purchased a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x20 SPR Firedot. Very nice all round, but again more money. I'm still liking the CMR as the best overall value...

I guess I'm just a low speed high drag kind of guy! This is precisely (pardon the pun) why I like it so much. The finely etched dot/horseshoe reticle allows precision shooting with the dot, whilst the horseshoe enables fast target acquistion in close up move and shoot stuff. I never use the BDC element of any scope reticle for distance, always preferring to dial in/out for elevation. My recently acquired VX-R Patrol has a much thicker SPR reticle and I'm not sure how that is going to work out yet.. |

I bought a Nikon M-223 1-4x PBR very lightly-used, off a friend, for $200 with the mount. I like it. I wanted the Burris MTAC, but the M-223 is good enough for that build, and the price being right will allow me to move on to other projects for now. Note: If you are used to red-dots, using the 1-4X style scopes at 1 magnification, the front sight post will appear very prominent. You either have to be used to that, or spend some significant time shooting it so you condition your eyes to looking through it.

| I have flip up sights on my flatop so I'm not sweating the font post, I'll just knock it down. I'm hoping to get into a small 1-4x that crack eggs at 100, oranges at 200 and grapefruits at 3. I wish a shop nearby had the leatherwood on the shelf so I could hold it before ordering it. Thats the way I'm leaning for now. Hopefully I'll settle on something to pick up in a few weeks. |

Small and 1-4 don't go well together. Most 1-4's are heavy for their size.
When I began my search for a 1-4 I decided on a 30mm tube and a lit reticle (you can save some weight by getting an unlit reticle). I found that everything within my budget ($500 or less) was similar in length and weight. Some examples: 11.3" 17oz Burris TAC 30 10.25" 17oz Burris MTAC 11.8" 18oz Millett DMS 9.7" 16oz Vortex Viper PST 11.3" 17.7oz Optisan Mamba 10.2" 16.5oz Leatherwood CMR Small but way outside my budget was the very short Valdada Pitbull. At 7.25" it is short, but weighs in at 23oz with a price tag over $1200! Also, it might be significant to note where the lit reticle adjustment dial is located. If it is located directly opposite the windage adjustment I found that it impairs my peripheral vision when shooting both eyes open. I prefer the dial to be either on top or offset to the side. |

How is it's clarity? Tracking? None so far..... I have the optic setup on a 18" 6.8 SPC dedicated PIG RIG shooting a stout load of H322 and 90 Sierra HPs. Using the BDC turret calibrated for a 55 gr FMJ @ 3100, my load is dead on @ 300 yards and about 1 moa high at all other distances with a 50 yard zero. Really do not think I will be shooting this rifle past 300 yards anyway. |
| I just picked up a Burris MTAC 1-4 x 24 at Black Bear Sporting Goods for $340...they now have them listed for $321. Not the TAC30 at that price, the MTAC. Checked it out at a local store and was impressed with the clarity, color, light levels and true 1x. Next: ADM Recon mount. |
