This is my first AR build, and I'm starting to piece together parts to build something nice. I'm starting with a stripped RRA lower and so far all I have is an RRA 6-telestock and an TA31DOC to go with it. I'm in no hurry to complete it but the project is to end up with an all-purpose rifle in .223; the AR is a great platform to meet my needs. I'd like to keep it carbine length and would prefer something close to a "1-piece" top rail. Daniel Defense has a complete upper that meets this pretty well... http://www.danieldefense.com/?page=shop/detail&product_id=63 but at $1000 you're starting to come a little close to LMT's MRP system. What I want to avoid is buying a complete upper and then shucking off parts of it only to replace it with quad rails and other accessories. Can anyone suggest what I should do if I'm looking to get close to an LMT MRP or Daniel Defense upper (as shown above) and stay around the 800 to 1000 price range? |

From the link you provided, it looks like you're interested in a complete upper including a "monolithic' rail system. There is nothing special about this setup. That said, have you considered putting an upper together yourself? If you went that route you could pick out your own receiver, bolt group, barrel and rail separately and save yourself some money. Besides Daniel Defense, the other popular monolithic rails include; Troy Industries Samson Manufacturing Midwest Industries (the cheapest) Option #1 CMT flat top upper $99 CMT BCG and charging handle $130 16" chrome-lined barrel, 4150 steel, 1/7 twist $249 @ CMMG or go with a 4150 steel, 1/9 twist $205 @ Bushmaster That leaves you with around $300-$500 to spend on the monolithic rail of your choice. Option #2 If you're not comfortable with assembling an upper yourself, you may also want to consider buying a complete upper less the rail system. Bravo Company USA comes to mind immediately, but Adco, Global Tactical, PK Firearms, or CMMG Inc can also help. All of these companies will install the rail of your choice as part of your upper purchase. Option #3 If you're stuck on the MRP, make sure you check out the new Vltor VIS. It's about $1000 for a complete upper, but that's cheaper than the LMT. |

Yeah, no telestocks in NJ...no hi cap mags either..or baynet lugs.... I still have a permanent residence in NJ (which I'm trying to fix as soon as the job will let me) but I'm residing across the boarder (renting) since I work in Philadelphia. Purchased the stripped lower in PA and all the components are either bought or shipped to PA. Thanks for expressing concern though; it's appreciated. |
