so a few months ago a guy at work had an AR stock for sale, he had bought it for his pistol then found out it was illegal... so i got it new in the package for 15$...

this justifies buying the rest of the parts to build a gun

i grabbed a CMMG A3 upper. now i need a lower parts kit, BCG, charging handle and barrel assembly? (and a lower, thinking of grabbing an MP15 lower from the local shop)

{if the CMMG upper is junk i will use it as a test for a belt fed ar upper}

i have no idea what tools i might need, i can probably make most any tool but, if any of you want to lend me some specialty tools or give me a hand with mounting the barrel it would be greatly appreciated.

il post pics as the parts start rolling in...

CMMG makes a great product.

Since you mention needing a barrel assembly I take it the CMMG upper is a stripped receiver - unless it's been damaged it is unlikely you'll have any problems with it.

LPKs, charging handles and lowers are not that hard to find these days. BCGs are a little trickier, but they are obtainable. My order of preference would be BCM, LMT, Young and CMT, but any one of those should serve you well.

What sort of rifle you will wind up with is determined mostly by what sort of barrel assembly you acquire, and the possibilities have quite a range. Variables include barrel configuration (rifle, carbine, shorter, longer, lightweight, M4 profile, HBAR, bull, chrome lining, twist, crown, gas system length and type, etc.), material and, of course, availability. The suite of variables you settle on will affect accuracy, longevity, ammuntion suitability and cost. Do you have an idea where you're headed with those things in mind?

thats what i have so far.

for a barrel i was thinking about a bushmaster 16" m4 type. chrome lined. i really want the 14.5"(?) m4 barrel but im not sure 1.5" is worth all the extra stuff i have to do for a SBR...i also want to look into the S&W 5.45 upper.

i havent even thought about twist yet, il be doing more research before i pick up a barrel.

If you want a fairly close M4gery, get the CMMG 14.7" M4 barrel with permanent A2 flach hider.

Specialty tools?  Not really, except a couple.
Get a good barrel wrench (usually around 20 bucks or less), and a castle nut wrench (optional, since you already have your buffer tube and stock installed).

Barrel Nut wrench for about $17

castle nut / stock wrench for $6

DPMS makes a multi tool as well for around 30 bucks.

Other than that, a good small hammer/mallet(s) (a metal one and a plastic one), and a punch set (harbor freight for under five bucks).
