Locally I can get either American Eagle or Walmart-Remington UMC for roughly the same price. Which of the two would be better for an AR15? Mostly plinking, not for serious target shooting.

either one will run fine, they are both very good plinking ammo but if they are priced the same I would rather have the AE everytime.  You also might want to buy a few boxes of each and see which shoots better out of your AR.

I like the AE better, because I believe the brass that's left over is a little better.

Especially if Lake City  brass was used.

I had a bad experience with the UMC a couple of weekends ago. I would go with the AE any day of the week. I had 4 ftf with the UMC, and it didnt seem as accurate with my gun as the AE. That being said, I just bought another case of AE yesterday and dont think i'll be using anything but for a long time.

Every caliber of UMC ammo I've ever tried was dirty and under powered. The brass is complete crap, thin walls, loose primer pockets and soft as hell.

I have used lots of brands over the years.  I left UMC completely,  Winchester white box, or AE are more attractive to me.

I left UMC completely

So, if we all stop using UMC.....Maybe Remington will drop the price?

I had a rem umc round blow out the primer and lodge it back in the carraige assembly.  This caused the bolt to stick back and could no way no how get it to come back forward in order for me to be able to break the rifle apart and fix it.  It was this forum and the ample knowledge here that gave me the answer to get it undone.

In short it came down to a hammer and a ruber caoted screwdriver taping on the teeth marks on the side of the carraige and slowly forcing it back down.It was one of the worst things I have ever had to do, so the hell with remington brass.  Every one knocks stuff like wolf, but that dirty shooting shit as never jammed my gun.

The prices of ammo at the local Walmart here is rediculous! The 20rd boxes of 55gr is $8.29 in Anchorage, Alaska. I went over to Sportman's Warehouse last night and got the exact same ammo for $5.50 a box. I bought all they had (17 boxes).
