They replace entire AR bolt carrier group. Can use with dedicated .22lr barrel or with 5.56 barrel, same adapter, just front of it different. For .22lr barrel:

OS explained it well - that is a Spile's receiver plug with a QD sling swivel... As for the buffer tube it is not needed on a blowback 22lr AR. You could use one if you wanted to use a Sig brace... |
